Maronite Christian Is Lebanon’s New President

Lebanon is home to an exceptionally large number of Christians, compared to other countries in the Middle East, which are nearly entirely Muslim, and Israel to the south, which is Jewish. In fact, about 33% of Lebanon’s 5.4 million people claim Christianity, more than 52% of those Maronites, a Syriac ethnoreligious people group related to Catholicism with origins in the 5th century AD.

Maronites have customarily held the Presidency, but for more than two years, Hezbollah has blocked elections. Now that the Shia Muslim terrorist organization has weakened considerably due to war with Israel and the fall of Assad in Syria, Thursday’s elections brought forth a new President, Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces Joseph Aoun.

From Aichiye, a Christian village in Jezzine province in the south, President Aoun has been described as compassionate, nonpartisan and committed to his job, both as commander and now the leader of his country.

That job won’t be easy, with the pressures of a weakened economy, Hezbollah’s war with Israel (the current ceasefire helps), and a new back-and-forth flow of refugees, some fleeing Syria, some returning. But having a President in place is a huge step forward for Lebanon, and a direct answer to our prayers here at the Prayer Wall. See our October 20, 2024 post:

Lord, thank You that Lebanon now has a president. Please guide him by Your wisdom daily. Deepen his faith and use him to rebuild this beautiful country, to give hope to the people, to unwelcome Hezbollah so every terrorist flees, and to open the doors for the lost to hear the good news and churches to thrive and multiply. Raise up into every position of leadership in Lebanon those who will care for their citizens, who have no ties to Hezbollah or any other Muslim extremist terrorist group, and who will instead follow God’s leading. Strip from Hezbollah every ounce of influence. Bring them to their knees in repentance and surrender to Truth. Stop the violence and be a Shield around the innocent. Comfort those who have lost much and chase out their fear with Your perfect love. Meet them in their dreams, talk to them throughout the day. Let them feel Your presence with them, hear Your voice guiding them, and see all the ways You protect and provide. Perform signs and miracles and wonders to turn all eyes to You. Shine Your love through Christians so powerfully Muslims will see You as You truly are, reject the hatred and violence of their religion gone wrong and choose Love instead. Watch over Christian families, farms, homes and churches and keep them safe from harm. Rebuild and replace what they have lost. Provide for their needs abundantly so they can also bless others abundantly. Be their Shield, their Fortress, their Help in time of need. Strengthen and multiply their churches. Begin a church planting movement that will spread throughout all of Lebanon and beyond, awakening the nations to Your love. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
