Letter from a Christian Worker in Gaza

Through schools, hospitals and other ministries, Christian workers have spread God’s love to Muslims in Gaza for many years before the current war began.

Today’s message and prayer come from the heart of a former teacher there, who says that in the midst of the current hunger crisis in Gaza, “One thing I am very grateful for is that there are still the older women around and they can make food from just about anything.

“I couldn’t tell you how many times a lady in the back of the van said, ‘Stop, stop Em Ben (or Abu Ben)! It’s Khobbeizeh!’ We’d stop, she’d crawl out and gather a ‘mess’ of Khobbeizeh off the side of the road. Free food. Who doesn’t like free anything?

“Khobbeizeh is a green leafy plant that can be gathered, cooked down and paired with lemon to make a tangy side dish. I’m so thankful that Palestinian women are so smart about using what is available to make food for their families. I’m hoping the younger women are taking lessons from the older ones.

“Last week, we received an update from our Pastor in Gaza (who founded Christian Mission to Gaza). He has been able to get food to some folks in the Jabaliya area. I’m not sure how he has done it, but it is certainly meeting a need in that area. The sweet comments he has received from those who’ve been able to deliver it are such a blessing.”

“All is being given in the name of the Baptist Church in Gaza. Baptists/Christians are known about in Gaza because for so many many years, we had the hospital and nursing school. The hospital was called The Baptist Hospital…. All those years of service have earned us good will in the eyes of the people.

“A saying that we often heard in Arabic was, ‘Min bab Allah.’ It means from the door of God. Sometimes someone would say ‘Min yed Allah,’ from the hand of God. Everyone recognizes — Muslim and Christian — that it is God who provides when there seems to be no way forward.

We praise you heavenly Father that every good gift comes from you. You are a good God. You are faithful. Give good gifts of food to Palestinians, we humbly pray.

Let’s join this precious Christian worker in prayer:

Lord, we praise You for the food provided through Christians in Gaza. Continue to give Your church favor there. Care for the wounded, grieving, sick, cold and hungry all throughout Gaza like only You can, and bring Your salvation near. Make a way for the millions who have never heard Your good news to at last find You. Invade their dreams. Speak to them as they sleep, as they wake, and all throughout the day. When they cry out to You, answer them in such a way they will know it is You. Don’t let even one more person die without knowing Your great love and plan for their salvation. Now, in the midst of so much suffering, we ask You, Lord, to break forth a church planting movement all throughout Gaza that is out of control, with thousands turning to You, O God of Love. For You loved them so much You gave Your Son to die for them so they can be saved. Give every heart a hunger for Truth and show them Jesus. We pray also for every Hamas terrorist. Invade their space. Get up in their face. Break the chains that bind them to hatred and violence. Lift the veil from their eyes so they will see You as You truly are, and bring them to their knees in repentance and fear of the Lord. Have mercy on Gaza and on Israel. Awaken every heart to You and bring an end to this war. In the powerful name of the Prince of Peace. Amen.
