Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique has been racked with violence over the past nearly eight years due to infighting between Islamic State Mozambique (ISM) and government forces. In fact, even though nearly 50% of Mozambique’s population is Christian, it is ranked among the most dangerous countries in the world for those who seek to follow Jesus because the ISM has vowed to murder all Christians and Jews who do not convert to Islam.
Several orphanages reside in that tumultuous region, where more than a million (now down to about 582,000) people have been displaced from their homes due to violence and rape. In November of 2022, pilot Ryan Koher of Missionary Aviation Fellowship and two South African volunteers, W. J. du Plessis and Eric Dry, were packing Ryan’s plane to take vitamins and other needed supplies to those orphanages when authorities detained them.
Without a trial or even any formal charges against them, the three men were imprisoned for several months. Then, in mid-March last year, they received a provisional release: Their case was still ongoing and they couldn’t leave the country, but they were no longer in jail. Eventually, Ryan and his family were allowed to travel again, even though the case was unresolved.
We have been praying for two years here at the Prayer Wall for the case to be dropped entirely. Now, praise God, He has answered!
“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.” Psalm 34:8
On November 4th 2022, Ryan was wrongfully detained in Mozambique.
Just over 2 years later, on November 8th, 2024, Ryan’s (& the two SA men’s) case in Mozambique has officially been dismissed!
We are praising God that not only did the prosecutor affirm Ryan and the men’s innocence in his report, but acknowledged the benevolent work of these men and the orphanage in Mozambique and the religious drive behind it! Even through trials, God’s name will be glorified!
We look forward to returning to life and service in Mozambique after Abbie’s birth and the processing of our visas – likely in Feb or Mar 2025.
Our family thanks every one of you for praying, fasting, and coming alongside our family during these last two years. You really showed us what the body of Christ looks like in tangible ways!

Lord, thank You for this beautiful answer to prayer! Thank You for sustaining Ryan, W.J. and Eric and using them to encourage other prisoners during their imprisonment. Thank You for the many who joined in prayer for them and their families during this difficult time. And thank You, Lord, for touching many lives and moving in the hearts of the authorities to at last drop this case and even acknowledge You and the way You SHINE through the faithful believers who are showing Your love in the midst of so much hatred and violence. Now, we ask You, Lord, to please smooth the way for Ryan’s family to obtain visas and whatever other permits they need to return to Your work in Mozambique. Use them all the more for Your glory there, as others hear of what they endured and see Your love in them as they return to the country that imprisoned Ryan without cause.
Please bring a quick end to the violence in Mozambique. Protect the children, the women, the elderly, the Christians, the Jews and every person evil men have targeted for harm. Visit Muslim extremists in their dreams and lift the veil from their eyes so they will see who You truly are. Convict them of their horrendous sins and show them Jesus is the only Truth. Give them courage to lay down their weapons and choose the One who is Love as their Lord instead. Surround every Christian with Your angel armies and keep them safe from harm in such dramatic and miraculous ways their persecutors will fall to their knees in fear of the Lord, see the love, peace, joy and forgiveness on the faces of those who follow You, and choose LIFE instead of violence and death. Awaken Mozambique to You, O Lord. May Your Kingdom come to every household and heart. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
