Join us Sunday, November 3, for the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church.
(Updated October 22) A main energy plant failed on Friday, plunging Cuba’s 10 million people into darkness. After several attempts to restore electricity, the power grid failed once again just as Hurricane Oscar hit yesterday as a Category 1. At least six have died in the storm and the power is still not restored.
Communist Cuba ranks 22nd among the top 50 most dangerous countries for Christians. Although 56% of Cubans claim Christianity, many of those are Catholic, some of whom engage in Santeria and other spiritist and superstitious practices. Only 11% of Cubans are evangelicals, and they live under the constant threat of persecution.
“Anything deemed to be in competition with the Communist Party of Cuba is squeezed, and this includes the Christian faith. Church leaders or believers who speak out against human injustice or political corruption—or who dare to criticize the regime—risk interrogation, arrest, smear campaigns and even prison sentences.
“The government can deny (a church’s) registration or simply ignore the application of some religious groups, forcing these churches to operate illegally. This gives the government an excuse to shut them down whenever they please. In these cases, the government then imposes penalties on churches, including fines, the demolition of buildings, church closure and the confiscation of property.
“All churches are monitored in Cuba, and may be infiltrated by citizens sympathetic to the regime and/or State security agents. Registered or unregistered, churches continue to be open for worship throughout Cuba—but only as long as the government allows it. As soon as a leader or a Christian is deemed to be anti-government or anti-revolutionary, the response is swift and harsh.”

And yet, in the midst of such persecution, the church in Cuba is growing.

50 New Lives in Cuba
Let’s pray …
- For a great awakening to Christ’s love in the heart of every person in Cuba.
- For Bibles to make it into the hands of every seeker and Christian who needs one.
- For protection over churches, pastors and every Christian and their families.
- For all barriers against the knowledge of Christ to come down, so every person in Cuba will have the opportunity to hear the Good News in a clear way and be saved.
- For the veil to be lifted from the eyes of the lost, so they will see Christ for who He truly is and hunger for His love and grace.
- For those captive to evil spirits to be set free and find salvation in Christ.
- For comfort to those in prison, that God will meet them in powerful ways and show them His love; for revival to sweep through the prisons, bringing hundreds to faith.
- For those in government, gang leaders, prison wardens, and other oppressive or violent persecutors and abusers to have a personal encounter with the Living God that brings them to their knees in repentance and fear of the Lord, so they will be saved and bless rather than oppress.
- For freedom of religion and for easy ways for Christians to connect and freely worship.
- For Christians to boldly shine Christ’s love to their neighbors and others God brings into their path; for His Spirit to flow through them in such a way that others are drawn to His light like moths to a flame.
