A landslide last Friday near Simaltal swept two busses carrying 65 people into a swollen river. Several bodies have been found, but 55 are still missing.
This year’s monsoon rains came late to Nepal, already killing more than 100 people since mid-June: at least 24 in other landslides, 19 by lightning strikes, and several more in severe flooding.
In Kathmandu, streets have turned to muddy streams and rivers, with countless houses and vehicles underwater. Several Christians are among those who have lost homes, and leadership trainings for pastors have suffered with transportation unavailable. One pastor trying to attend a training last week faced the challenge of walking five hours to a town with a bus station, but with no busses running to Kathmandu, he would have to walk the five hours back home. With 258 unreached people groups and Hindu extremists targeting Christians and closing churches, Nepal has ranked among the most dangerous countries in the world for believers and seekers in recent years. After a government collapse on Friday and new leadership in place, it’s possible more persecution is to come.
After earthquakes in 2015 killed 9,000 people, and then yet more shook the Himalayan country in November of 2022 and November of 2023, and after Covid’s shakeup of the economy in recent years, Nepal has struggled greatly. But hardship breeds hungry hearts, and many are turning to the Lord. In fact, the evangelical church’s annual growth rate in Nepal is 5.3%, more than twice the global average.
Lord, please comfort those who mourn. Burn within them a deep hunger for You, for only You can bring them joy and peace in the midst of such sorrow. So many of those who died never heard the good news. They don’t know about Your endless love or the eternal purposes You created them for. Give these grieving families and every lost person in Nepal such a longing for more that they seek You with all their heart and find You. Set them free from the chains that bind them to the demons they worship and the idols they bow to. Frustrate every effort of shamans, and convince them You alone are the Way, the Truth and the Life. Bring Christians to the lost to show them Your love. Surround every Christian and church with Your angel armies and protect them from harm. Give them favor with leaders, neighbors, family members and others. Disciple every Christian and ground them so strong in their faith that all the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) flows out of them constantly. Make others around them take notice and ask them how it is that they can still have peace in the midst of hardship. Bless them so abundantly they also bless their neighbors. Perform signs and miracles and wonders to turn all eyes to You. Awaken all the peoples of Nepal to Your truth and love, O Lord. Make the way for Your Word to be translated into all their many languages, and begin a church planting movement in each of those. May Your kingdom come and Your will be done in every heart in Nepal. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
