More Than 1,000 Die in Hajj Heatwave

More than 1,000 Muslims from around the world have died over the past few days in Saudi Arabia, as temperatures soared to 51.8C (125.24F) during the annual Islamic pilgrimage of hajj. Among the dead are more than 600 Egyptians, almost 100 Indians, 60 Jordanians, at least 11 Americans, five Iranians, and an unknown number of Indonesians, Tunisians, Algerians, Senegalese, Pakistanis and Iraqi Kurds.

On Sunday alone, Saudi Arabia reported more than 2,700 cases of heat exhaustion among the 1.8 million pilgrims from at least 22 different countries. Family and friends continue to search hospitals for those who are missing.

Prayer for Muslim Pilgrims

In recent years, millions of Muslims have converted to Christianity. Hear this testimony from Mohamad Faridi, president of Iranian Christians International:

God Almighty, have mercy. Rescue those who suffer. Comfort those who mourn. When they cry out to You, answer them. Meet them in their dreams and give them visions of Christ. Make clear Your plan of salvation and save them. Lord, so many of these nations have been cut off from hearing the gospel because their governments and even their families and communities have made converting from Islam a crime. Reverse those laws and mindsets, Lord. Bring into power people who will welcome Truth and open doors for Your Word to be made available to every Muslim, even translating it through Your leading into every language Muslims speak. Open up discussions that lead to Christ. Plague each mind with doubts about Islamic teachings and values, especially those that lead to violence, hatred, murder, rape, forced marriages, torture, terrorism and suicide. Give them a craving so strong for love, every path will lead them to Jesus. Show them You alone are the Way, the Truth and the Life, and that no one can come to the Father except through You. Break the chains that bind them to Satan’s purposes, and set them free to seek Yours. Bring Christians to them who will tell them about the wonders of Your love, and bless those Christians so abundantly that everyone who meets them will know only You love Your children like that, and that the abundant life filled with love, joy and peace they seek is only found in Christ. Awaken every Muslim who journeyed to Mecca, and every heart in each of their nations. Fill them with a thirst and hunger that can only be satisfied by You, and meet them in such powerful ways they won’t be able to resist Your grace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
