After last month’s expressway collapse that killed 50 people in Guangdong, and violent rain and hailstorms that killed seven in Jiangxi province earlier this year, China now faces two extreme conditions in the north and south.
Heavy rain, flooding and landslides in the south displaced some 36,000 people in Fujian and killed at least one in a swollen river in Guangxi. Meanwhile, sweltering heat in the north, with highs around 38C (100F), has been threatening crops in Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and areas near Beijing with the possibility of drought.
As tensions rise between China, Taiwan and the rest of the world, let’s pray for this vast country of nearly 1.5 billion people and 443 unreached people groups.
Due to an increase in persecution, China has risen some 29 places on Open Doors’ list of most dangerous countries for Christians to live. Their government’s highly sophisticated surveillance system is both invasive and oppressive, with Christians as a main target. Churches have been invaded, threatened and forced to disband in recent years, with believers suffering a span of persecution including arrests, interrogation, threats, imprisonment and worse. Children and youth are forbidden to learn about Christ and those who teach them (including their parents) are punished. In addition, the government adjusts Scripture to fit their socialist agendas.
All foreigners suspected of missionary activity have been forced out, and Chinese Christians associated with them are regularly interrogated and threatened. A well-known pastor jailed for many years and suffering through health issues has been denied release several times. Let’s pray for him and others who are persecuted for their faith, that God will use them to spread His love, like the woman in this story:
China: Imprisoned Mom Boldly Shares Christ
Lord, please be with those suffering from severe heat and floods. Provide for all their needs, especially families that have been displaced and have lost so much. Do it in a way they will know it is You. Give them a hunger for You so strong they will seek You with all their hearts and find You. Bring Christians to them to demonstrate Your love in ways they will easily receive.
Be a Shield around every believer in China. Protect them and their families from surveillance and persecution. Provide safe ways for Christians to meet together to worship and study Your Word; and place a shield of protection around every true Bible to prevent its confiscation and protect the owner. Translate Your Word into every language and reach every heart with Your good news. Please make a way for the safe release of this pastor and all Christians held in prison for their faith. Heal them of their illnesses and injuries and provide for all their needs. Use them in powerful ways to shine Your love and draw many people to You. Multiply Your church by tens of thousands this year.
Remove from power every person in authority who fights against You, and replace them with those who will open the way for Truth to reign. Build Christians’ faith, increase their love, empower them to forgive and shine forth Your light through them so brightly the darkness is obliterated and the nation is flooded with Your glory. For every Christian who is persecuted, bring thousands of lost to faith in Christ. For every church that has been closed, plant 1,000 more. For every child forbidden to hear about you, save 10,000 more. Make a way where there seems to be no way for Your Gospel to reach every corner of China and for faith in Jesus to rise up and replace the era of Communist oppression with Revival.
