Prayer for Muslim Pilgrims

More than 1.8 million Muslims from throughout the world have converged upon Mecca, Saudi Arabia, June 14-19, for Hajj. Hundreds have died from extreme heat.

Hajj is a mandatory pilgrimage to the “House of Allah” which must be carried out at least once in a lifetime, if they are physically and financially able, for the purpose of cleansing of their souls from worldly sin. It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, along with Shahadah (the oath that there is no god but Allah), salat (prayer), zakat (giving to the poor) and sawm (fasting for Ramadan).

Yesterday, pilgrims participated in a symbolic stoning of the devil to mark the final days of Hajj and the start of Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, June 16-17, in which Muslims sacrifice livestock to commemorate Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael in obedience to God. (In Genesis 22, it was Isaac, not Ishmael, whom the Lord asked Abraham to sacrifice.)

A Militant Muslim’s Encounter with Love

Lord God Almighty, You are the One and only God. Beside You there is no other. You are not a God of terrorism, violence and murder, as so many Muslims believe. They war against each other, Muslim against Muslim, and perform terrorist attacks against innocent people all in the name of Allah. But they do not know You. Their eyes have been blinded by the evil one, who binds them to religious rituals and uses them for his purposes. Please lift the veil from their eyes. Unstop the ears of their hearts. Break the chains that bind them to demons of false religion, violence, rape, murder and so many other terrible acts that are so opposite Your character. Reveal to them clearly the Truth who sets them free. As they perform their rituals, as they pray, show them who You truly are, God of Love, slow to anger, abounding in grace. You sent Your Son Jesus to die for their sins. No amount of rituals or pilgrimages could ever cleanse them, for no man can save himself. Only through Christ’s sacrifice are we truly saved. Show up in their dreams tonight and every night, Lord. Perform signs and miracles and wonders that turn their hearts to Christ. Translate Your Word into every unreached Muslim language and make it available to them. Give every Muslim such a deep hunger they will seek You with all their hearts and find You at last. Soften every hardened, abusive heart and surrender it to Love. Visit every persecutor in such powerful ways they will turn from opposition to You and terrorizing Christians to submission to You and repentance. Bring imams and whole communities to salvation through Your lovingkindness and mercy. For only You can satisfy the deepest longings of the Muslim heart. You are the answer they have been looking for these almost 1500 years. May this be the year every Muslim heart awakens to You.
