A Syrian refugee camp burned to the ground in Lebanon’s Bekaa region April 29. With class in session at a nearby school run by a Christian humanitarian aid organization, students and teachers were safe, but when they returned home, nothing remained of their tents. (R.B. Triumphant Mercy Lebanon gathered clothing to give to needy families, but had to close the school for security reasons. They “know we are Christians. We have been talking to them. We have been showing them love again and again; this is opening conversations,” said a TM worker, who worries that hundreds of Syrians now have no place to live.
An estimated two million displaced Syrians harbor in the tiny Middle Eastern country of only 5.49 million, and about 90 percent of those refugees live in extreme poverty, needing humanitarian aid to survive. Lebanon’s collapsed economy only adds to the difficulty. “Food, shelter, and clothing are not easy to come by, especially at a time when anti-Syrian sentiment in Lebanon is at an all-time high,” writes MNN.
In mid-May, the Lebanese government helped 225 Syrians return to their home villages, but things are not entirely safe yet in Syria, either.
Camille Melki, of Heart for Lebanon, said, “The hardships around us are many, and we do not celebrate the brokenness and hardships of people. But what we celebrate is the God-given opportunity to come in the name of Jesus Christ and tell them they are loved.” Heart for Lebanon shares the love of Christ with refugees through medical clinics, kids’ camps, and aid deliveries like food and warm blankets. Lord, we ask You, please for Syrian refugees displaced by war, earthquakes, poverty and now fire. Comfort them in their need and open their hearts to receive Your love. Shield them from danger. Let them feel You close, hear Your whispers, see You in their dreams, and know You as You truly are. So many millions of refugees still have yet to hear the good news. They have felt lost, hopeless, forgotten, abandoned. Some are on dangerous routes even now, seeking safety and freedom. Send angels to guide them straight into Your perfect paths that will lead them to Christ. Don’t let even one more die without hearing Your clear invitation to salvation. Thank You for these loving Christians helping them along their journeys, ministering to their needs and showing them what Your love is like — medical workers, counselors, teachers, aid workers, rescuers, shelterers, even fellow refugees. Connect the lost with Christian outreaches, ministries and churches. Bring them into homes and shelters where food, clothing, medicines and other needs can be filled by Christians who care. Multiply those supplies miraculously, Lord, so that everyone sees and knows You are the One who did that. Show Yourself strong on behalf of those who suffer. Perform signs and miracles and wonders that point all eyes to You. And pour out Your love upon the camps of displaced people, covering the children and women especially, protecting them from abuse and harm. Invade traumatic memories to bring forth healing like only Truth can. And draw every heart to Christ in such a way they cannot resist Your love.
