At least 23 people were killed by tornadoes and storms in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Missouri over Memorial Day weekend. Many more were injured, and about 500,000 people lost power.
On Tuesday last week, tornadoes ripped through several states, leaving at least five dead in Iowa, injuring dozens more and destroying tens of millions of dollars worth of homes, businesses and property. Then the next day, a tornado hit central Texas, flipping cars and shredding roofs in Temple and Belton, just after the previous week’s storms killed eight people in the Houston area and left hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power ahead of a heat wave.
Let’s pray for those who are suffering in the wake of these storms.
Lord, please provide for those in need in a way they will know it is You. Give them shelter, food, drinking water, and a place to sleep. Comfort those who mourn. Heal those who are wounded. Be near to those whose homes and livelihoods have been devastated and lead them to find their hope in You. Bring loving Christians to help them rebuild their lives and to share your good news in the midst of their hardship. For those who have been running from You, but now find themselves with no roof over their head, give them a deep hunger that drives them to return to You. Open their eyes to see Your greatness and love, their ears to hear Your voice calling them to You, their minds to discern Truth from lies, and their hearts to yearn for the more they were created for (John 10:10). When they cry out to You, answer them, Lord, in powerful ways. Bring Christians to them to show them hospitality and love them into Your arms. Send Christian counselors to help those affected by trauma to healing and freedom. Bring forth something beautiful from out of so much tragedy like only You can (Romans 8:28). Abundantly bless Christians who have lost homes or businesses so they can help others in need, and do it in such a miraculous way, the lost who hear the stories of Your faithfulness will see Your goodness and turn to You. Father God, we also want to pray ahead of hurricanes, tornadoes and other dangerous storms to come. Please be a Shield around our homes and families. Guard us from harm, and do it in a way we know it is You. When we cry out to You, answer us and rescue us. Calm the storms, both in the air and in our hearts. And draw us all closer to You. Awaken every heart in this nation to Your love and transform us through the tempests to come. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
