Missionaries Killed in Haiti

Gangs shot and killed three missionaries in Haiti Thursday night just as Haitians began to hope the reign of terror could soon come to an end.

Jude Montis, 45, served with Missions in Haiti for two decades. The Haitian pastor and mission director leaves behind his wife Eunide and two children, ages 2 and 6.

The son of US missionaries David and Alicia Lloyd, who began Missions in Haiti in 2000, Davy Lloyd, 23, grew up on the island and speaks Creole fluently. In 2005 at age five, he and his foster sister were actually abducted in Port-au-Prince on their way home from school, but police quickly rescued them. In 2022, Davy married Natalie, 21, daughter of Missouri state Rep. Ben Baker. The new couple immediately moved together to the war-torn island to serve with Missions in Haiti.

About 2,500 people have been killed or injured by gang violence in in the Caribbean island, and more than 180,000 children are now displaced, some of those forced into gangs. Missions in Haiti seeks to minister to children and their families through a children’s home, a boy’s home, two churches, three schools, a bakery and other loving projects. A few days before their death, the Lloyds had the opportunity to escape the war-torn island, but chose to stay in order to continue their ministry to children with no way to escape.

Although violent gangs have controlled over 80% of the capital city for some time now, the Missions in Haiti compound had felt relatively safe. And with a U.N.-backed police force soon to arrive from Kenya, missionaries and locals were hopeful gang rule would soon end. But Thursday night, as the Lloyds left a church youth meeting, truckloads of terrorists accosted them, looted the compound, and then shot and killed the three missionaries.

Lord, please wrap Your arms around Jude’s wife and children at this time, as well as the Lloyd and Baker families, and all those at Missions to Haiti who are grieving now, especially the children who were there when the terrorist attack happened. Calm their fears and heal their minds, hearts and bodies. Meet them in powerful ways and carry them through this difficult time. We pray also, Lord, for the lost who have come in contact with these faithful servants. Remind them of the words of life and love spoken to them by the Jude, Davy and Natalie, and draw them into Your arms to be saved. Strike their murderers and the other gang members with such terrible remorse for what they’ve done that they will fall to their knees before You in fear of the Lord, repent and be saved. Disturb their dreams at night with your truth, pointing them to Christ. Get up in their face. Invade their space. Break the chains that bind them to evil, violence, murder and demons, and set them free to see You are the One they long for. Give them courage to lay down their weapons of violence and seek the God of Love. For those still trapped on that island, we ask You, Lord, to be their Shield. Provide for all their needs. When they cry out to You, answer them in such a way they know it is You. And please, Lord, make the way soon for the violence to end and for peace to reign in Haiti. Awaken every gang member, every police officer, every civilian, every official, every man, woman and child in Haiti to Your love, and save them.
