Leading up to tomorrow’s International Day for the Unreached here at the Prayer Wall, we have been praying daily for unreached people groups in the news. Come join us, and invite your praying friends.
A Howeitat tribesman was killed and 47 others imprisoned, some of those with death sentences, for resisting displacement in order to build a $500-billion eco-project known as Neom, or “The Line.”
At least 6,000 people have been moved and several villages destroyed to make way for the car-free megacity set to stretch 106 miles long and 1,640 feet high, but only 656 feet wide across the Saudi desert. (Merlyn Thomas, Lara El Gibaly, BBC May 9)
The ancient Sunni Muslim Bedouin tribe also spelled Huwaitat number about 40,000 in Saudi Arabia, where they have lived for hundreds of years, and also inhabit parts of Jordan, Syria and Egypt. In the Arab Revolt of 1917, they fearlessly fought alongside T E Lawrence, who wrote about the Huwaitat hero Auda abu-Tayi in his Seven Pillars of Wisdom memoirs.
Traditionally nomadic, the large Judhami tribe traces their genealogy back to an Egyptian named Huwayt, and possibly Fatima, daughter of the prophet Mohammed. They speak a Northwest Arabian dialect of Arabic.
More than 92% Muslim, with 29 people groups yet unreached with the gospel of Christ, Saudi Arabia ranks #13 in Open Doors’ World Watchlist of most dangerous countries in the world for those who seek to follow Christ. In fact, converting from Islam to Christianity is considered among the greatest sins a Saudi Muslim can commit. Nevertheless, the underground church continues to grow.
Lord, we thank You for the growing church in Saudi Arabia. Please be a Shield around every Christian, protecting them from persecution and harm. Today, our hearts are burdened for the unreached Howeitat tribe, as well as the more than 33 million other people in Saudi Arabia who have yet to hear the gospel. Please break through their barriers. Make the way for them to hear the good news in a way they can easily understand and be saved. Awaken every heart with a deep hunger for Truth. Move whole clans and tribes to seek far and wide to find the One who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. As their Muslim government presses to displace the Howeitat from their ancestral homeland, turn their discontent to a yearning for Christ. Visit them in their dreams. Talk to them throughout the day. Bring Christians to them who care. And show them the way of salvation. Awaken all of Saudi Arabia to Your love, O God. Don’t let even one more person die without knowing the truth of who Jesus is and why they were created.
