Floods, Christians, and Hidden Tribes of Brazil

Leading up to the International Day for the Unreached on May 19 here at the Prayer Wall, we are praying daily for nations in the news and their unreached people groups. Come join us, and invite your praying friends.

This past week, we’ve been praying for hearts to turn to Jesus in south Brazil in the midst of torrential rain and floods which have killed at least 147 people and displaced more than a half million. Many are still missing.

Praise God, He has be answering our prayers, as several churches have opened their doors to welcome displaced families and have been sharing Christ with the lost (Franco Iacomini, CT, May 10):

  • As soon as Pastor Tiago Gomes de Mello received requests for help last week, he left his home in Porto Alegre and opened his church, Igreja Batista Boas Novas in Novo Hamburgo, for needy families, only to find he couldn’t return home. His wife and children were rescued by boat and he was finally reunited with his family four days later. The church now houses 45 displaced people.
  • Since the beginning of May, Viela da Graça Igreja, with 75 members, in Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul, has hosted 50 people in their two-bathroom, 3,500-square-foot building.
  • The 800 members of First Baptist Church of Ijuí are sending supplies to those in need in Porto Alegre.
  • The floods spread into Igreja em Reforma in Porto Alegre, but their 80 members have been cooking, cleaning, and providing donations for 82 people, none of whom are evangelicals, in an improvised shelter provided by a church family.

Although Brazil is considered 90% Christian, nearly 50 people groups are still unreached with the gospel, many of those numbering less than 500 in isolated jungle regions protected against outside influences, including missionaries and medical care. With no Bible in their languages and no outside contact with Christians who can share the good news, most of these hidden tribes have no way to hear about Jesus. And yet, poachers, loggers and miners have made it into their forbidden lands, murdering some and bringing in TB and other deadly diseases these sheltered tribes have no immunities to fight against.

Lord, please provide for those in need. Heal those who are injured. Rescue those who are trapped in the floods. Comfort those who mourn. And do it in such a way that all will know You are the One who did that. Thank You for these churches who are reaching out to displaced families and sharing the good news with the lost in the midst of such tragedy. Multiply their supplies and anoint their lips to speak Your gospel in such a way that thousands will come to faith in you. Already one church has grown exponentially after the floods started. Please grow all the churches in the area. Give people a hunger for You so great they will seek You with all their hearts and find You. Lord, many Brazilians are nominal Christians attending Catholic Church but without a personal relationship with You. Meet them in their dreams at night, speak to them throughout the day. Bring Bibles to them so they will read what You want to say to them, and draw them into churches that will love them into Your arms. And bless abundantly these Christians who are sacrificially giving to help those who have lost so much and who need You.

We also ask You, God of All, to show mercy to the unreached people groups of Brazil. For so many of them, You have already built bridges in their indigenous folklore preparing them for Your salvation. Please, now, open the way for Your good news to enter their regions and reach every heart. Visit them in dreams and visions. Speak to them throughout the day. Show them clearly who You are and give them a hunger to know You. Touch their hearts like only You can, Jesus, drawing them to Yourself. Protect them from outside influences that would harm them, but make a way for Christian doctors and missionaries to reach them and minister to their physical and spiritual needs. Don’t let even one more person die without the chance of knowing Your love, grace and salvation. They may be unknown to the outside world, but no one is hidden from You. You love them and created them to know You, experience Your great love and love You back. Please draw them up into Your perfect purposes and save them. In Your precious name. Amen.

Let’s push back the darkness together as one, and pray forth God’s purposes in these trying times. “For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:1 rsv
