Today, I feel the Lord prompting us to pray for people who are currently prominent in the headlines, such as presidential candidates and other political figures, heads of media, the rich and famous, those who have been falsely accused or who are on trial for standing up for something right, and even murderers and terrorists.
Feel free to insert names into the prayer, as He leads:
Lord, so many famous figures by worldly standards are rising up to speak out about issues, using it as a chance to get their names in the news all the more. Others are in the news out of necessity, because if they don’t fight for what’s right others may not follow. And some are slandering and accusing their opponents loudly, hoping to find favor somehow that way with the people. So much need for attention. But fame and favor with the world last only a moment, and then everything we have tried to build up about ourselves just crashes to the ground. There is only one way to obtain the meaning in life we crave. For those holes within us are God-sized, a need that can only be filled by deep, intimate relationship with the One who created us for love. Conquest, slander, earthly fame or power will never satisfy. That hunger within us to be known and favored will never be filled by fame or earthly empires. O Lord, please get up in the face of every person vying for a headline. Invade that space where they need to be seen, heard and known. Whatever consumes their waking and sleeping thoughts, O God, shove those obsessions aside. Break through with Your astounding love, with the devastating truth that all they have fought for is in vain. Then let them feel You there, up in their face, speaking to their need, striking them with fear of the Lord, simultaneous with the flood of Your unending grace and love washing over them. May they at last feel fully understood, seen, heard, known, and — in the midst of all their pain, anger, sin and raging need — loved by You. Draw them to repentance, Lord, with Your lovingkindness and mercy. Awaken them to Truth. To the only Way, to the One who is Life. To the One whose name is Love. Clearly set before them the path to salvation, and give them courage to surrender to the only Sovereign One. For in all of history there has never been One more famous than You. Kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall, but Your kingdom lasts forever. So, pursue these earthly wannabes until all they want to be is Yours. Then, as they surrender their lives to You, transform them so visibly, for all the world to see, that thousands living in darkness will be drawn into Your light. May the whole world see You for who You are, Jesus. But if they refuse Your advances, woe to those who fall into the pits they have prepared for themselves. O Father, please have mercy on us all. May we turn to You before it is too late.
