Headlines & Prayers for the Middle East

TURKEY: Islamic State extremists attacked a Catholic Church in Istanbul during Sunday mass, killing a 52-year-old Alevi man attending services. One of Turkey‘s largest religious minorities, Alevis practice a variant of Islam which is neither Sunni nor Shiite.

JORDAN: A drone attack killed three and wounded more than 40 US troops on Sunday. Since October, Iran-backed militants in Syria and Iraq have targeted US military facilities about 165 times, wounding more than 120 US service members in the region. US has retaliated with several strikes to weapons depots in Syria and Iraq.

RED SEA: Since the war began between Israel and Hamas, Iran-backed Houthis from Yemen have disrupted global trade by targeting ships traveling through the Red Sea. In an effort to deter them, the US and UK have struck at several Houthi targets in Yemen and the Red Sea. But last Friday, Houthis struck a British vessel, and for the first time since October, targeted a US warship with a missile, which was quickly shot down.

GAZA: On Monday, 24 Israeli soldiers died, marking it the IDF’s deadliest day within the Strip. That brings their ground offensive death toll close to 220, while nearly 63,000 Palestinians have been wounded and 26,000 have died in Gaza since October 7, when Hamas terrorists murdered 1,200 people in Israel and took more than 250 hostages. Of the 130 still held by Hamas, 104 hostages may still be alive. Talks continue for returning the hostages and ending the war, but nothing has been agreed upon. For more information, see our Israel-Gaza page.

LEBANON: Iran-backed Hezbollah continues its attacks against Israel‘s north, killing some 15 soldiers and civilians since October 8, while more than 170 Hezbollah terrorists have died.

Lord, please guide the thoughts of every leader making decisions at this time, and bring an end to violence, war and terror in this region. Tear down prejudice, hatred and persecution. Give every Muslim, Israeli and others caught up in this fight such a hunger for Your love, they will lay down their weapons in pursuit of Truth. Show them who You are, O Prince of Peace. Visit them in their dreams and compel them to turn to You before it’s too late. Tens of thousands have died without You already these last three months, shouting Your name as the One whose honor they fight for, and yet they know You not. You loved them so much You sent Your Son Jesus to die in their place, placing the weight of sin upon His shoulders so they can be free, and yet they have chosen You not. Even now, You hold out to them this free gift of forgiveness, salvation, abundant life here on Earth and eternal life with You in Heaven. But they have been blinded by our true enemy, Satan, who uses them to kill, steal and destroy. Break the plaster from their eyes and the chains from their hearts. Set them free to see You as You truly are, feel Your touch, hear Your voice and know You alone are God. Strike them with fear of the Lord and give them courage to lay down their weapons of warfare and choose the One whose name is Love. Be a Shield around ever Christian, seeker and innocent. Protect them from harm. Surround them with Your angels visible to those who come against them. Frighten terrorists with Your angel armies and bring them to their knees in repentance. Make a way of escape for the hostages and shield them from both Hamas and friendly fire. From among their guards, raise up those so sickened by the horrific acts they have seen their fellow terrorists commit, they will actually go against Hamas and aid hostages in their escape. Yes, Lord, we ask You for a miracle. More fervently still, we ask You for their salvation. Most, even perhaps all, of both captives and their captors have yet to believe in You. Make the way for them to hear the good news of Your salvation and receive You as their Savior before it’s too late. Awaken Israel, Gaza, the Westbank, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Yemen, the Houthis, Hezbollah, Hamas, Alevis and all Muslims to Your love. May this be the year that thousands come to faith in Christ.
