It’s easy for the angels who see God’s face every day to worship Him. But when His children down here in this world filled with sin and trials worship in spirit and in truth, sight unseen, from the midst of all our hardships and heartache, that is —
I paused here as I wrote that sentence, looking for the word God wanted, because the picture I saw was of all of Heaven stopping to listen, and tears streaming down the cheeks of the glorious One we love.
“Triumphant” is what He then whispered into my heart. When we worship Him in the midst of our problems and pain, we triumph over the enemy. 2 Chronicles 20; Isaiah 30:29-32; Psalm 149.
In fact, often in worship, I find the Spirit moving me into powerful intercession to set captives free or pray for nations. Because worship breaks the chains of the enemy and sends him to flight. 1 Samuel 16:14-23.
Worship invites God near, and changes our focus from looking at how big our problems are to rejoicing in how great our God is.
That means … worship changes us.

Lord, today I choose to worship You. In the middle of my mess. In the midst of my pain. In the dark hours of the night when my thoughts keep me awake. As I scroll through the news and cry out, “Please, Lord, come.” So much pain, so much sorrow, so much evil in this world, and for many of us, inside our own homes. Father, please, come and meet us here. We choose to lay down our fears, our hopes, our dreams, our aching for something more, we lay it all at Your feet. For YOU are the MORE we are longing for. You are the answer to every woe, the giver of the greatest of joy. You are mighty and powerful and holy and just. You do not let evil go unpunished, and yet You are gracious and abounding in love to the sinner who turns to You. You see the pain of the lonely one and set the orphans in families. You are near to the faint of heart and restore the strength of the weary. You are All-Powerful, and no problem takes You by surprise. You know every breath before it is breathed, every turn in the road before it is made. You know what is behind us, what we’re stepping in now, and what lies before us. You created us not to walk this road alone, but held safely in Your arms. Because You. Are. Just. That. BIG. Bigger than my problems. Bigger than my pain. Bigger than this earth and all the evil within it. Your greatness exceeds the minuscule speck of the enemy’s mark on this world, for You have already stepped into every corner he tries to take over and with one step of Your mighty foot, he is crushed. Defeated. For all time. Christ has already won that battle, and so we praise You, for no battle is too great for Your strong arm to save us. We call upon You now, O Creator of All, to step across this planet, sweeping across it with Your love, grace, peace and salvation, awakening each heart to Your light and crushing the enemy beneath Your feet. May all those who follow the way of evil fall. But we who trust in the Lord our God shall rise on eagle’s wings and soar. Exodus 19:4.
