A real-live battle between good and evil rages, and we are in the midst of it. Ephesians 6:10-12.
We have a real enemy, and it’s not our brother or sister. The minute we begin attacking God’s people, we have switched sides. Revelation 12:10-12.
Feeling justified in our attacks against others is a normal enemy tactic. If he can whitewash our judgment, jealousy, self-defense, religious pride or anger and make our reasons feel “righteous” or “godly,” then he can convince us to turn away from attacking the the real enemy and instead fire on our own men!
Like a disoriented soccer player, we just might kick a goal for the enemy and cheer as if we’ve made one for our own team.
It sounds ridiculous, and yet it is so true. Look at Paul’s story. In our day, we would say he grew up in the church, seminary-trained, knew the Bible inside and out. And yet he blindly chased after and attacked those who loved Jesus and followed Him, all in the name of “truth” and “righteousness.” Acts 22:1-16, Philippians 3:4-6.
He thought he was doing God a favor! John 14:6-7.
We easily become zealous about certain beliefs, values, interpretations of Scripture or denominational traditions and, in our zeal, persecute those who truly love Christ and follow Him. Isaiah 29:13.
Don’t do it!
Hold fast to your Commander’s one command for you — LOVE. (Matthew 22:37-40)
And return to your post!
How has the enemy been using you to attack others? Ask the Lord.
Let’s pray for those who have been judging and attacking God’s people will experience a Damascus-road encounter with the King that knocks us off our “high horse” and onto our faces before Him, so our ears will be opened to hear His voice and our eyes to see that Love is the One we’ve been fighting against all along.
Only then will He change our identity to become someone truly useful to His cause.
