Deadly Japan Earthquake, Plane Crash

Rescuers race the clock, freezing rain and possible landslides to find survivors beneath the rubble of several powerful earthquakes that hit the Noto Peninsula since Monday, including a magnitude 7.6. At least 82 people have died and more than 30,000 are displaced, with food running out in the displacement centers and power and water shortages in many households.

A coastguard aircraft carrying provisions to the affected region collided with a passenger plane on the Tokyo runway and burst into flames Tuesday. All 379 people on the Japan Airlines flight made it to safety, but 5 died on the coast guard plane.

Nearly 98% of Japan is considered unreached with the gospel of Christ. The evangelical annual growth rate is -0.4%, compared with a global rate of 2.6%.

Father, so many have died without knowing Your salvation. Please give every heart in Japan a deep hunger for You, so they will search for Truth with all their hearts and find You. Comfort those who mourn and care for those in need. Do it in such a way they will know it is You. Perform signs and miracles and wonders in the midst of such tragedy, pointing all eyes to the God of Love. Give wisdom to leaders, rescuers, medical workers and others who aid. Rescue those who are trapped. When they cry out to You, answer them in mighty ways so they know it is You. Provide shelter, food and clean water for those who have been displaced. Bring Christians quickly to their aid to show them Your love, pray for healing, share the good news and counsel those in distress. Deepen the faith of Christian earthquake victims and bless them so abundantly they will share of their provisions with those in need. Awaken the lost to Your salvation, and those who are saved to more and more of Your love flowing through them. Awaken Japan to Your love, O merciful God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
