Myanmar’s Battle with Evil

While the world turns its attention to Gaza and the atrocities of Hamas, the peoples of Myanmar continue in their years-long fight against a brutal terrorist regime. Since a military coup in February of 2021, Burma’s Russian-backed army has ruthlessly attacked, raped, mutilated and massacred their own people, including women, children and the elderly. An estimated 24,000 civilians have died in endless burnings, bombings and other assaults on hospitals, schools, churches, internally displaced (IDP) camps and whole villages. As with the massacres of October 7 in Israel, the images of innocent people slaughtered in Burma are too graphic to show, too horrific to imagine. (See Free Burma Rangers.)

Such violence comes on top of 75 years of civil war in which minority people groups have faced violent persecution — even genocide, as in case of the Rohingya. In addition, Buddhist extremists have harshly persecuted Christians for decades. Since the recent coup, however, somewhere between 1.7 and 3 million people have been internally displaced, and around 70,000 refugees have fled the country to join the already more than a million Rohingya.

This past summer, at least 200 airstrikes in two months fell upon innocent people, including the mostly Christian Karen minority people group. One mother described leaving everything behind but the clothes they wore, as her family fled their village under attack by the Burmese army. They trekked through the jungle for a month, a handicapped child on her back, hiding from soldiers in constant fear, never knowing how or if any of them would eat or sleep, and wondering if each new day would be their last. Finally, haggard and hungry, they arrived at an IDP camp, where thousands of other persecuted civilians had found refuge, many of them also Karenni. With Christian aid workers providing food, clothing and shelter, the woman’s family at last felt safe. Two weeks later, a Burmese fighter jet bombed the camp, sending all 5,000 refugees on the run. Many were injured, but by God’s mercy, only one died. Christians have been cooking for them and secretly taking them food in their jungle hiding places, while setting up a new camp for them in safer territory.

They are not the only ones in need. An estimated 17 million people in Myanmar may not make it through the coming months without humanitarian aid. Although many Christian rescue and aid agencies are doing what they can to help, the need is still so great, especially for those who are dying without Christ. (See this video by CBN.)

Lord, in the midst of Myanmar’s civil war, we ask You please to be a shield of protection around those who are in danger. Many are hiding in the jungles along the borders, Lord. Others are facing the violence head-on. God, please go to each person, and let them know they are found. That You see them, You love them, You care about what they’re going through, and You are the Way of salvation. Show Your glory to both those who are driven by hatred and violence and those who long for peace and security. You alone can save us from the true enemy who seeks to devour. Satan comes to kill, steal and destroy, but You have come, Jesus, to bring us eternal life. John 10:10. So, find every heart that has hardened against You and soften it. Hear every cry of the distressed, and answer them. Overturn every plan of the enemy, and bring forth a Great Awakening to You in Myanmar. Set Buddhist monks and followers free from the demons that bind them. Give them dreams and visions that will point them to Truth. Preach the Gospel clearly to them in a way they can easily understand, and open their eyes to see You as You truly are, tremble in fear of the Lord, and surrender their lives to You. Get Bibles into the hands of every lost person all throughout Burma, and protect those who risk their lives to deliver them. Open up the air waves so those in every village, IDP camp, jungle, and even every enemy camp can receive radio broadcasts in all their many languages sharing the gospel in a way they can easily understand., May those who worship idols cast them down and worship You alone as God. Give Christians such faith, grace, hope and love during these trying times that they rise up like beacons of Light in the darkness, shining for Your glory and stepping out in such powerful acts of love and miracles that everyone around them sees the Light of Your love in them and are drawn to You like moths to a flame. Cast out the demons that have tethered so many to a life of fear, and set every person free to enjoy Your grace and love. Make a way where there seems to be no way for the war to end and Myanmar’s children to grow up in peace. In Jesus’ powerful name. Amen.
