As one of the world’s most dangerous countries for Christians, Algeria is 96.5% Muslim and 99.9% unreached with the gospel of Christ. Interestingly enough, in the midst of much persecution, Christianity has been growing at a rate of 8.1% annually for several years, compared with the global rate of 2.6%. (See JoshuaProject.net)
A lot of that growth has been happening among the Kabyle Berber people, a non-Arabic speaking Muslim people group of farmers and shepherds in the lush coastal mountain regions of Algeria.
“Algeria is home to the largest congregation of Christian converts from Islam in the world. And the Algerian government has taken notice,” Voice of the Martyrs said on their website. In a recent Facebook post, they added “The Algerian government continues to pressure Protestant churches, closing 30 of the country’s 47 churches since 2017.”
“Christians have increasingly experienced restrictions and pressure from state officials to renounce their faith,” writes Open Doors. Laws that regulate non-Muslim worship prohibit “anything that would ‘shake the faith of a Muslim’ or could be used as a ‘means of seduction intending to convert a Muslim to another religion’.”
Thank You, Father, for the way You have been growing Your church in Algeria, especially among the Kabyle Berbers. Don’t stop, O Lord. Keep drawing people to Yourself from among every people group in all of Algeria. Call out Christian missionaries to live among the lost, sharing the gospel boldly as you lead. Strengthen local believers to stand up under pressure from authorities, family and community to renounce Jesus. Make them fearless, yet wise. Fill them with faith, forgiveness, compassion, love and words from Your Holy Spirit that penetrate the heart of every lost person who meets them. Open the eyes of Muslim extremists and government officials to see You and Your angel armies guarding everyone who believes in You. Make Christians bold, loving, merciful and so opposite Muslim extremism that all will be drawn to You through their love, peace and joy. Thank You, Lord, because so many Muslims have become dissatisfied with Islam. Give every heart in all of Algeria such a fierce hunger for You they will seek You with all their hearts and find You. Make a way for Your Word to be translated and made available to every Algerian. Raise up leaders over villages, towns, schools and all walks of life, especially within the government, who will open the way for Your gospel to spread like wildfire and Christians to freely worship You. For every church which has been closed, open 100 more. For every Christian who is persecuted, bring 1,000 Muslims to faith. Awaken Algeria to You, O God. May Your kingdom come to every home and heart all across North Africa. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
