The Islamic State Mozambique (ISM) in Mozambique has vowed to murder all Christians and Jews who do not convert to Islam. Such brutal persecution by Muslim extremists has ranked the Christian-majority nation one of the most dangerous in the world for followers of Jesus.
Last week, ISM terrorists opened fire on Christians in a village in northern Mozambique’s tumultuous Cabo Delgado, killing at least 11 and injuring dozens. They also reportedly destroyed property and burned houses, sending panicked villagers fleeing into the forest. (La Croix International, Sept. 21) The Cabo Delgado region has been racked with violence since 2017, with more than 4,000 people dead and close to a million displaced due to infighting between ISM and government forces.
On November 4 last year, missionary pilot Ryan Koher and two South African volunteers were detained while packing his plane to take vitamins and other supplies to needy orphanages in Cabo Delgado. Although never formally charged with a crime, the three men spent four months in prison. Then in mid-March, they were given a provisional release; their case is still ongoing, but they are allowed to live at home in Mozambique. As of this week Ryan is now allowed to do mechanic work and other tasks at the hanger, although he still cannot pilot. His attorney has submitted a request to the prosecutor to allow Ryan to travel out of the country. If granted (hopefully next week), he will be able to return to the U.S. with his wife and sons and reunite with his extended family.
Lord, please heal the wounded and comfort those mourning the loss of their loved ones in Naquitengue village and other areas throughout Mozambique where Christians are persecuted. Wrap Your arms around them and let them feel Your presence near. Protect survivors from further persecution and bring to justice every murderer. Be a Shield around believers, guarding them from those with evil intent. Open the eyes of their persecutors to see Your angels standing in the way of assault. Block every blow and bring Muslim extremists to their knees in repentance and fear of the Lord. Give those who watch such violence a hunger to know the God of Love, and give Christians the grace to forgive. Drive the lost to ask questions that will lead them to salvation. We speak LIFE over Mozambique in Your name, Jesus. Bless Your people and multiply Your church. Deepen the faith and love of every believer. For every Christian who is persecuted, bring 100 Muslims to faith. Begin a church planting movement in that nation that will not stop until the land is filled with Your praise. We thank You, Lord, for protecting Ryan, W.J. and Eric during their imprisonment, and that Ryan is now able to work some. Please make the way for his case to be dropped and for his family to return to the US and be reunited with those who love them and have been praying so long. In Your precious name. Amen.
