Right now, September 19-28, Hindus around the world are celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi, which commemorates the birthday of Ganesh, an idol with an elephant’s head revered for removing obstacles. Ceremonies involve a 16-step ritual of offerings, culminating in immersing the idol in water. A curse is believed to fall on anyone who happens to catch a glimpse of the moon at this time.
Hindus worship anywhere from 33 to 330 million gods. Although most of the 1.1 billion Hindus worldwide have never heard the good news, those who do hear often respond by adding Jesus to the lineup of gods they seek in times of need. Radical breakthrough is needed for demonic chains to be broken and the spiritual plaster to peel from their eyes so they can see Christ for who He truly is and worship Him alone. (See Isaiah 44.)
As political movements push for a Hindu nation, mobs of extremists have been violently attacking Christians in many areas throughout India, including Manipur and Delhi, and pastors and other believers are often arrested for sharing the Gospel with Hindus.
Please join us for the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church on Sunday, November 5, 2023, as we pray for our brothers and sisters who are in danger, and for their persecutors to be saved:
International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church
Lord, we ask You to build within every Hindu a deep hunger for something more. As they bow to idols, make every ritual feel hollow and wrong. Give them courage to defy tradition and seek You with all their hearts until they find You, Jesus. Make a way for them to hear Your Word preached in their more than 2,000 languages and truly understand. Call out Christians to translate Your Word into each of those languages, pray for them, preach the Gospel among them, love them in heart-transforming ways and plant churches in every Hindu community. Break the chains of witchcraft and spirit worship, and release them from the control of demons who blind them from the Truth and hold them in prisoner to fear, darkness and lies. We ask You, Lord, for dramatic conversion experiences among Hindus worldwide, especially extremists. We pray brahmanas, gurus and other promoters of Hinduism will hear You calling them to Yourself; meet You through dreams, visions, miracles and other power encounters; forsake all other gods to serve the one true God of Life; and lead whole families, villages and people groups to faith. We ask You, God of Light, for breakthrough among Hindus. Break through the darkness with Your light. Show them a better way, the only Way, Truth and Life. When they hear Your good news, grip them with the understanding that You are the One they’ve been longing for, and open wide their hearts to receive You. We ask You, Father, for a Great Awakening in India and all throughout the world in every Hindu community, with thousands, even millions turning laying down their gods to worship You alone.
