Nigeria: 42 Martyrs in a Month

PLATEAU STATE: Muslim and Fulani terrorists killed 37 Christians in several attacks within a month. On Sunday, September 10, they murdered ten believers in Kulben Village, Mangu County, and injured one. On August 14, they attacked a community high school in Kwi Village, Riyom County, while in session, killing two Christian teachers as they taught, and injuring two other Christian staff members. On August 10, armed Fulani invaded the homes of Christians in two Heipang District villages, killing 21, and injuring others. On August 7, Fulani killed four Christians in Nchiya Village, Mangu County. (Morning Star News, Sept. 13)

KADUNA STATE: On August 9, terrorists killed a Christian woman, Gloria Isa, while she slept in her home in Kajuma. On August 23, terrorists shot and killed a Baptist pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Mayau, as he worked on his farm in Chikun. On August 25, two Christian brothers, Yusha’u and Joshua Peter, were kidnapped in Zaria, where they had fled shortly after their father was abducted in Ikara. (MSN, Aug. 30) On September 7, assailants intending to kidnap a parish priest in Fadan Kamantan set his home on fire instead when they failed to gain entry. Rev. Emmanuel Okolo and his assistant escaped, but seminary student Na’aman Danlami died in the fire. (MSN, Sept. 8)

TARABA STATE: Terrorists killed Christians Balanko Alex and his wife, shot several others and kidnapped six on September 10 in the Mile Six area of Jalingo. (MSN, Sept. 10)

Although Nigeria is nearly 52% Christian, it has been rated the sixth most dangerous country in the world for those seeking to follow Christ, largely due to terrorist activities by Muslim and Fulani militia, who have martyred and abducted vast numbers of Christians. In fact, more than 5,000 Christians were killed last year in Nigeria by Fulani and other Muslim extremists, accounting for more than 90% of all martyrs recorded worldwide.

Nigeria also led the world in abductions with more than 4,700. Largely unstopped by the government, Fulani gangs and militia have gained great wealth through kidnapping ransoms, which they have used to buy arms and vehicles to further their terrorist activities.

Lord, please comfort those who mourn, heal the bodies and minds of every survivor of these horrific attacks, and provide for all their needs. Speak tenderly to their broken spirits. Conquer devastating memories with the healing power of Your love and grace. Father, have mercy. Change the tide of violence in Nigeria. In this most deadliest place in the world for Christians, we speak, “LIFE, in the name of Jesus!” Protect the innocent. Bring every persecutor to their knees before You, as You did Paul, and show them who You are. Haunt their dreams, visit them throughout the day, topple the lies they believe with Truth, and show Yourself strong on behalf of victims in such miraculous ways that every violent offender will tremble in fear, drop their weapons and fists, and repent, surrendering to Your love and salvation. Be a Shield around every believer, guarding them and their families from harm. Empower them by Your Spirit to speak Truth and act in love, joy, peace, forgiveness and faith, with a demonstration of Your power, as You perform miracles and wonders in the sight of their persecutors and leave crowds in awe of You. Heal the sick, the lame, the wounded, the blind. Raise the dead to life. When guns or other weapons are aimed at Christians, cause them to misfire and drop to the ground. When fists or feet are lifted to beat or kick a believer, freeze them in place so the persecutor is unable to move and must ask the Christian to pray for them first before they are freed. Send shockingly visible angels to surround every believer and step in front of them, blocking enemy attacks. Turn every curse spoken against a Christian into a blessing instead, and bring such disastrous events into the lives of persecutors that they know beyond any doubt You are the One who protected that Christian, and that only in surrender to You will we find Life. Move as never before in Nigeria, O God. Awaken every heart to Your love. Bring witchdoctors to faith in You, leading whole villages to burn their fetishes and choose You as Lord. Break the power of demons over every life, Jesus, so those who have lived in fear will now hunger for You and seek You desperately until they find You. Lift the veil from their eyes, break their bonds, set them free from the enemy’s clutches, so they can see You as You truly are, choose to worship You alone as God and finally live the abundant life they were created for. John 10:10. Raise up a generation holy unto You of preachers and missionaries who will take Your Good News into every dark corner of Africa and beyond, penetrating the darkness with Light and changing lives forever with Your love.
