A rare and extremely devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit western Morocco Friday night, killing more than 2,000 people and critically injuring more than 1,000 in Marrakech and surrounding provinces.
Morocco is more than 99% Muslim and listed among the most dangerous countries in the world for Christians, especially converts from Islam, who face tremendous pressure to renounce their faith. Some have been victims of violent attacks by Muslim extremists. Others are targeted by the government for interrogations, beatings or imprisonment. Christians may be arrested and fined just for having a Bible or talking about their faith with a Muslim. Some have lost their inheritance rights or custody of their children. Others are harassed or fired because of their faith. Intense pressure from family members and community to renounce Jesus forces many believers into isolation or relocation, making it difficult to find and sustain Christian fellowship, even online, where they are also harassed. With 31 people groups and so many barriers to the Gospel, it’s no wonder 37,044,000 of Morocco’s population of 37,058,000 are yet unreached. But our God is on the move, and people are coming to Christ. Let’s pray for Him to step in and pour out His love over every heart, calling them to Himself.
Lord, already so many have died without ever hearing Your message of salvation. Please protect and rescue those who are trapped. As they wait, meet them in dreams and visions, showing them who You are and inviting them into grace. When they cry out to You, hear them, O God, and save them. Guide rescuers to find them. Perform signs and miracles and wonders to point every heart to You. Comfort those who mourn and heal those who are wounded. Provide food, water and electricity where people are stranded without. Make shelters and open up homes of kind people who will welcome in those who have lost everything and care for them. Push through the darkness with Your light, awakening every heart to You. Give every person such a deep hunger for You, they will seek You with all their heart and find You. So many have lost businesses, homes, loved ones and more. O God, please have mercy. Reach into every family and heart and SPEAK in such a way that they hear You and respond. For only You can carry them through this time of great hardship. Bring Christians to them to show them Your love, to comfort them in their time of sorrow, to share Your Good News, to mourn with them, to counsel them and to help them rebuild their lives. Open the way for Christian rescuers, doctors, nurses, counselors, builders, and relief workers to come in and share Your love in visible ways and speak the gospel such that they will understand who You are and turn to You. Open wide every heart to seek Truth and find You.
