A special government committee formed for the purpose of licensing and legalizing church buildings in Egypt has approved nearly 3,000 applications for church buildings in the past seven years. That’s exciting news in light of the fact that before the committee was formed in 2016, Christians often waited as long as 20 years to get a license to build just one building. Egypt, which is 86% Muslim and on Open Doors’ World Watchlist of most dangerous countries in the world for Christians, has dropped 15 places this year, “mainly because there have been fewer reports of violence against Christians, including fewer faith-based killings and instances of properties being attacked….” Even so, the level of violence against Christians is still very high. At least five Christians were killed last year, and more than 20 believers were attacked, among other reported incidents. In addition, a significant number of Christian converts from Islam have been arrested and physically abused by the Egyptian security services.” (See Open Doors)
In fact, many Egyptians are coming to faith, and other Muslims traveling to Egypt are also finding Jesus.
Lord, we thank You for the many lives You have transformed already in Egypt, for a president who speaks favorably of Christians, and for the thousands of churches now licensed. We ask for Your blessings on this committee and on all those who are helping to open doors to the Gospel. Please multiply Your church by the tens of thousands. For those Christians facing persecution, please, God, be their strength. Surround them with Your angel armies to fight against Satan’s plans. When their persecutors try to harm them, open their eyes to see Your angels. May they drop to their knees in repentance, and surrender their hearts to You. Multiply Your church in Egypt by the thousands. Give every lost person a deep hunger for You that drives them into churches and onto the internet looking for Christians to tell them how they can be saved. Make a way for ever person among the 24 Islamic unreached people groups in Egypt to hear Your good news in a way they can easily understand. Meet them in their dreams. Speak to them throughout the day. Awaken every heart, family, home and community to Your love. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
