Amina Nanfuka was killed by her Muslim husband the very same day she chose to follow Christ.
A relative in Kampala, who had become a Christian just two years before, heard Amina needed to see a doctor in her city, so she invited her to stay in her home. “I shared the saving power of Jesus, and she showed a desire to accept and to believe in Jesus but requested waiting for the day that the doctor in Kampala had given her for a checkup and thereafter attend the church,” the relative said. So, on July 9, the relative took Amina to church, where the pastor led her to Christ and gave her a Bible in Luganda language.
A close friend of Amina’s husband saw them just outside the building. “You go to church?” Ariko Yahaya asked the new convert from Islam, but she remained silent and they left immediately. The relative accompanied Amina to her home in Bugiri, where she had left her three children, ages 3, 6 and 9, with their grandmother.
Her husband, Abdullah Waiswa, arrived three hours later. Without greeting his wife, he yelled, “Why did you lie to me that you were going for a medical checkup and instead decided to go to church?”
He pulled her into a bedroom, locked the door, demanded she show him the Bible, and then beat and strangled her to death. Police are now searching for Abdullah’s whereabouts. (See the full story at Morning Star News, July 27.)
More than 83% Christian, Uganda has no laws against conversions. Persecution comes from Muslim communities seeking to terrorize Christians.
Lord, we ask You for Abdullah and Ariko’s salvation. Overwhelm them with guilt for Amina’s murder, and bring them to their knees in repentance. Wherever Abdullah is in hiding, bring Christians to him, whether on the internet or in person, to tell him of God’s great love and forgiveness. Meet both him and Ariko in their dreams, showing them the way to salvation. Convict them of their sin and show them the truth of Christ’s death and resurrection, that He is God’s Son and He alone is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Give them a hunger for Christ’s love so deep they will seek You with all their heart and find You. Connect them into a church that will show them kindness, loving them into Your Kingdom. But if Abdullah does not repent, bring him to justice soon. Prevent him from harming anyone else, and please watch over the children. Make a way for them to grow up in a loving home where they will hear the gospel clearly shared and know You, Jesus. Be a Shield around Amina’s relative. Don’t let Abdullah or other Muslims do any evil to her. Bless her and comfort her in her grief, reminding her that now Amina is in Heaven with You. She is free from the dangers and difficulties of this life, free from her husband’s tyranny, free to worship You forever. Remind this relative that today Amina is in eternity because of her obedience to share God’s love, even in the face of great danger. Use her to also share Your good news with the grandmother and children. From this terrible tragedy, bring forth beautiful fruit, O God of Miracles. Be both Father and Mother to these children, raising them up to love You with all their hearts. And bring many more Muslims to faith through the love and grace they see in Christians who are persecuted.
