At least 34 people have died in Algeria due to fires in recent days, especially in Bejaia Province (23). Flames also spread in nearby Tunisia.
Meanwhile, three people have died in Greece, including two pilots whose plane crashed while fighting wildfires. Thousands have been evacuated from the islands of Corfu, Evia and Rhodes.
Hailstorms and tornadoes in the north of Italy claimed the lives of two people this past week, while wildfires in the south (Sicily) killed three.
Other wildfires broke out this week in Portugal, Spain, Croatia and Turkey.
Fires also currently rage in various areas of Canada and the USA (California, Colorado, Oregon, Montana, Washington, Alaska, Utah, Texas)
Lord, please comfort those who mourn and show them Your love. Protect firefighters from harm and give them wisdom in the battle. Come with Your rains, put out the fires and heal the land. Protect those who are in danger, supply the needs of those who have lost homes and property and are now displaced. When they cry out to You, hear their cries, O God, and answer them in such a way they know it is You. In the midst of such devastation, please God, have mercy. Open up hearts to long for You and then lead them to where they can find You. Abundantly bless Christians and then move them to share those blessings with those in need, along with Your good news. Open up churches and Christians’ homes and other facilities where those who have lost much will be loved and well cared for, and most of all, where they will hear the gospel and be saved.
Father, many of us are going through the fire now in other areas of our lives, through hardships and trials. Even as fires burn out the old to make way for the new, we ask You now, Lord, to bring forth from the ashes of what has gone up in flames … something new, something bright, something beautiful and growing by Your hand. Use the fire of affliction to draw us up into Your arms and drink of the refreshing Living Waters of Your Spirit at work within us. Comfort us, renew us, revive our faith, set us free from the things that hold us back from more of You, grow us and use us for Your glory. May all who see us go through the fire know that You are the God we worship. Yes, Lord, may they know we are Christians by our love, peace, joy and all the fruit of Your Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23. Lift the clouds of darkness. Blow away the smoke. And brighten the lives of everyone around us with Your light in us. May every heart on Earth awaken to Your love, O God. May we finally realize that You are the One we long for, and when our faith is in You, we have everything we need. In Your name. Amen.
