As we continue in our prayers for nations devastated by war, let’s also lift up those suffering from this past week’s tragic events:
SYRIA: A bomb exploded near a popular Shia Muslim pilgrimage site south of Damascus this week, killing at least six people and wounding more than 20.
ECUADOR: The mayor of Manta died in a shooting that killed one other and wounded four more on Sunday. In addition, dozens died in Gayaquil prison clashes in which 120 prison officers were taken hostage. A force of 2,700 soldiers subdued the rebellion freeing the hostages, but now inmates of another prison in Esmeraldas have taken 17 guards hostage.
SENEGAL: At least 17 died when a boat carrying mainly Sengalese migrants and refugees capsized off the coast of Dakar early this week.
INDONESIA: An overloaded ferry capsized near Sulawesi, killing at least 15 people, with nearly 20 others still missing.
SOMALIA: An al-Shabab suicide bomber killed 25 soldiers and wounded more than 40 at a training academy in Mogadishu on Monday.
CAMEROON: At least 12 died and more than 12 were injured when a building collapsed in Douala Sunday. In addition, 16 people were killed in a fire at a nightclub in Yaounde.
CHINA: The roof of a gym collapsed on a middle school volleyball team in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang Province, killing 11 of 19 victims, mostly children.
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO: A soldier shot his family and others at a funeral for his son on Saturday, killing 13, including 10 children in northeastern Congo. The region has raged with violence and unrest for decades, as more than 120 groups fight for control of mineral resources. This year, more than 600 have lost their lives in numerous mass killings, and nearly 400,ooo have fled their homes in Ituri province.
Lord, in each of these instances above, many are grieving and others are in need of rescue, healing, shelter and provisions. So many deaths and dangers remind us of humanity’s desperate need for You. Please meet those who are afraid or hurting, touching them and speaking to their hearts in such personal ways they will know You are the One they’ve been looking for. When they cry out to You, answer them, O Lord, and show them the way to salvation. Give them a hunger for You and then satisfy them with Your felt presence. Bring Christians to them to show them Your love and share the Good News. Bless Your people abundantly so they will also abundantly share with those in need around them. Bring Christian counselors, medical workers and other aid workers to those in need. And set the captives free, Lord. Awaken every heart to Your love like only You can.
