Hungry Prisoners Ask for Bibles

“Prison Fellowship has witnessed a remarkable surge in testimonies of incarcerated men and women encountering Jesus Christ through personal Scripture study. With a dedicated program for distributing Bibles, (Christian) books and other valuable resources, the ministry has seen an extraordinary increase in the demand for God’s Word,” reported Charisma News on June 22.

In fact, the annual number of Bibles requested by prisoners in the US has risen from around 5,000 before 2019 to more than 250,000. That’s an increase of more than 50 times!

Could it be, O Lord, that You have sparked an awakening to You in prisons throughout the US? We pray for all the more. Grip every heart with a deep hunger for You that just won’t quit. Get Bibles into every prisoner’s hand. And when they open them, cut them to the core with Truth. Tear down every stronghold, break every chain, and set them free from their sins, demons and addictions to follow You at last. For You are the One they were created for. To know You and be known by You. To receive Your great love and love others through that love. Place Your angels around every prisoner who seeks You and guard them from harm. Be an impenetrable Shield, so strong that when others seek to attack or harm them in any way, they will be thrown back by the force of Your grace. Speak forth love, grace, forgiveness, peace, and joy so loudly that hardened criminals will crumble before Your mercy and find hope in Your salvation. Forgiveness. Let that be the theme of Your song as they go to sleep at night. Mercy as they arise each morning. Show them who You are and how Your way is better. Give prisoners courage to stop living for their own gain, which has served only to crush them, and to surrender their lives to the One life was created for. Lift the veil from their eyes so they can see You as You truly are. Break down every wall. Crawl through the bars and sit there with them in their jail cell, showing them who You are and speaking to their deepest needs. Until at last they choose You, knowing You are the One they have sought all along. We pray also, Lord, for chaplains, that You will give them favor with prisoners, guards, wardens and others in charge. Open the doors wide for them to bring Christians who care into the prisons to shine Your love into every dark corner. Bring to them those prisoners and guards who hunger for You, and use them in powerful ways to set the captives free by Your grace, as they preach Your good news and lead prisoners in Bible study and steps to recovery from addictions. May Your Word speak in power, and Your servants in love, so Your Kingdom will come in every prison all across not only the US but the whole world. Bring forth a great revival that flows outward from within to touch gangs and whole cities, bringing millions to faith in Christ. That they may be free indeed. Born again. New life in Christ. Remade. Renewed. Restored. And walking out at last in the purposes You created them for.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Romans 8:1, 2 Corinthians 5:17 KJ21
