At least 79 refugees died and 104 have been rescued from a fishing boat that capsized in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Greece Wednesday. Perhaps another more than 450-550 people remain missing, including about 100 children.
On Monday, about 1,200 people were rescued from two different boats in distress, one with 400 and another with 800. Another 2,000 or more migrants in danger were rescued this past weekend. As organized crime groups take advantage of volatile political and economic conditions, more than 70.000 refugees have endured similarly perilous journeys in an effort to escape to Europe this year. Most are from unreached people groups in Muslim countries where they have been forbidden to hear about Christ.
Lord, please protect those in danger. Don’t let anyone perish without the opportunity to experience Your love and salvation. Make a way for them to hear Your Good News such that they can easily understand. Lift the veil from their eyes so they will see You as You truly are, and open their ears to hear every word You speak to them. Give them such a deep hunger to know You they will seek You until they find You. For only You are their true Home, Lord. Bring Christians to their aid to help them find safety, shelter, counseling, food and other needed provisions. Meet them in their dreams and give them visions from Your heart to theirs. When those in need cry out to You, answer them. Perform signs and wonders, healings and other miracles in such a way that they will know You did that, Jesus. Topple every wall that has kept them from knowing You, and draw them to Yourself with lovingkindness. May Your perfect love cast out fear and give them courage to choose You as Savior. We ask You, Lord, especially for Muslims and others who have been forbidden to seek You in their home countries. Give them courage to seek You now on their journey to find freedom, for only in You are we truly free. Make knowing Jesus the main topic of conversation on the boats, as they await passage, in times of distress and as they seek a new place to call home. Then, as they surrender to Your grace and choose You as Savior, open the way for them to take Your Good News back to their home countries, transforming thousands more lives with Your Truth and Love.
