Haitians Fight Back

Violence in Haiti has reached horrific levels with gangs now controlling more than 80% of the island nation’s capital. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes, many of them living in makeshift shelters without basic services, as gang members break into residences, raping, kidnapping and murdering to gain control of neighborhoods. These first four months of 2023 tracked more than 630 kidnappings and at least 815 homicides, with dozens of police officers killed. Haiti’s National Police force is tragically overwhelmed, with many officers leaving their posts.

This week, crowds fought back with rocks, machetes, bottles and fire, killing at least 13 suspected gang members.
