30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening
Verses for contemplation: Romans 12
Explorers in the 16th century first introduced Christianity to Oceania, but few records mention missions until the 19th century. Papua New Guinea, with its 885 tribes and almost as many languages, has attracted missionaries focused on unreached peoples and Bible translation. Today, that nation is about 95% Christian.
Revivals have happened through the years in various areas of Oceania, characterized by prayer and repentance opening the way for a movement of the Holy Spirit. Although the region is considered majority Christian, many young people today leave the faith.
Prayer points to consider:
- Tribal religions, syncretism
- Secularism
- Unreached peoples (Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist in Australia and New Zealand)
- Typhoons, cyclones
- Corruption, crime
- Isolation (hard-to-get-to villages and islands)
Prayer starter:
Lord, we praise You because Your Word has entered so many of the people groups in this region and is now readily available in most languages. Please grow Your church. Make it thrive and expand out from here to the nations. Worship songs from Australia have already united Your people across the world with heartfelt praise. But secularism is growing and several indigenous tribes engage in syncretism and spirit worship. Invade every corner of darkness with Your light. Get up in each person’s face. Invade their space. Show them who You are. Let them feel Your love, hear Your voice, see You at work and know that You are the God they’ve been longing for. Give every lost person all across Oceania a burning hunger for You that won’t stop until they find You. Break them from the chains of tribal religions, New Age, satanism, atheism and anything else they have set their hearts on to worship that is not the One True God. Make a way for every person to know the Truth that sets them free. Please watch over children and keep them from abuse and harm. Raise up a generation of young people who love You with all their heart, who are courageous to go opposite the way of the world and fight for the things that matter most, men and women with purified minds who choose not the lust of the flesh, but whose greatest passion is for You, God. Call out pastors, evangelists, youth leaders, teachers, prison workers, politicians and Christian influencers from all walks of life who love You and others, and who seek to do what is right. Open the way for righteousness to replace corruption and evil, and bring about a great awakening in all of Oceania to You.
Parallel Prayer: Our 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening coincides with Ramadan. March 23-April 21, Muslims throughout the world are fasting and seeking God right now. Let’s pray they find Him!
Lord, surround every Muslim in Australia, New Zealand and the islands of the Pacific with Christians who will love them into Your arms. Put Bibles into their hands, and give them a hunger for Your Word, O God, so that when they hear the Good News, they will understand, at last, that You are the One they long for, and surrender to Your grace and salvation. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
Dinner and a Prayer: Each day during these 30 days, we will share with you ideas for special family prayer times, including a suggested menu to go with that day’s prayer theme. Today’s suggestions:
Search the internet to choose recipes from Australia, Cook Islands, New Zealand, Fiji, French Polynesia, Guam, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, Micronesia, New Caledonia, Niue, Pitcairn Islands, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Palau, Samoa, American Samoa, Solomon Islands, Wallis and Futuna, Tonga, Tokelau, and/or Tuvalu. Have your children research some of these, and then share with the family. Menu suggestions: Fijian coconut fish, Australian Shrimp on the Barbie, New Zealand kiwi bread, kaukau (Papua New Guinea sweet potatoes), coconut caramel bread (Samoan fa’ausi)
