Day 14: Central Africa

30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening

Verses for contemplation: John 8:31-32

Many of the first missionaries to the animistic people groups of Central Africa in the 19th century died of illnesses endemic to that area. Others suffered so many hardships they gave up after a brief amount of time. But some endured, and today all of these countries are considered to have a Christian majority, with the exception of Chad (32% Christian).

Even so, Islamic terrorism has ranked several Central African countries among the most dangerous in the world for Christians. (See the nations colored red on the map below.)

Map of West Africa showing (in red) countries where Christians are persecuted, and the number of people groups yet unreached with the Gospel to the right of each country name, 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening, Prayer Wall for the Nation and the World. Prayer points to consider:

  • High number of Christians in danger
  • Militia violence (Central African Republic)
  • Islamic extremists
  • Churches torched, Christians beaten, killed
  • Loss of homes, livelihoods due to Islamic attacks
  • Christian girls forced to marry Muslim men
  • Children from Christian families forced into Islam
  • Unreached peoples (especially Chad!)
  • Tribal religions, demon worship
  • Poverty

Prayer starter:

Father God, please have mercy on the peoples of Central Africa. So many still do not know the truth about Your Son’s sacrifice. Make a way for every tribe and tongue to hear the Good News and understand. Give each person in this region such a hunger for You they will travel far and wide to find You, even at great sacrifice. When they seek You, Lord, quickly come to them and save them. Build Your church all across this region. In most of these countries, Christians are a majority, and yet they face terrible persecution, especially those who convert from Islam. Please shield believers and their families. Rescue Christian girls from rape or forced marriage to Muslim men, and children from being forced to join Islam, Provide a network of believers all across Central Africa who will help each others’ families out of danger. Warn every believer before their persecutors arrive and get them quickly to safety. Use Christians to shine Your light, pushing back the darkness and turning all hearts to You through their joy, peace, grace and love. Awaken the peoples of Central Africa to You, O God. Flood their lands with Your truth. When they cry out to You, answer them and heal them. Have mercy on them and save them because of Your great love. You created them to know You, to love You and to lead others to Your love, so please break the chains of the evil one on their lives, governments and families, and set them free to know You. May Your praises be sung in every village, neighborhood and home, as You bring peace to the hearts of those who have suffered so much.

Parallel Prayer: Our 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening coincides with Ramadan. March 23-April 21, Muslims throughout the world are fasting and seeking God right now. Let’s pray they find Him!

Father God, perhaps the Muslims in Central Africa who violently persecute Christians truly feel their cause is right. Show them Your righteousness, love and justice. As they seek You this month, meet them in their dreams. Give them visions so vivid and so full of Truth they will drop their weapons of hatred and fall to their knees to beg Your forgiveness. Raise up Christians who will bear bold witness, sharing Your Good News with Muslims far and wide, loving them, forgiving them, and bringing so many to faith, extremists will turn from their evil ways to search for Truth themselves, and bring many other lost with them into Your Kingdom.

Dinner and a Prayer: Each day during these 30 days, we will share with you ideas for special family prayer times, including a suggested menu to go with that day’s prayer theme. Today’s suggestions:

Search the internet to choose recipes from Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, DRC, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and/or São Tomé and Príncipe. You can also ask your children to research some of these countries to find barriers to the Gospel, and then share those together with the family as you pray. Menu suggestions: muamba chicken (DRC and Angola), kanda (Central African meatballs with pumpkin seeds), peanut and squash soup (Chad), akwadu (Equatorial Guinea fried bananas)

You can also go to Joshua Project to discover unreached peoples, and Open Doors and Voice of the Martyrs to see where and how Christians are persecuted.

If you would like to plan ahead for international meals, see the “Dinner and a Prayer” section at the bottom of our 30 Days page or in the back of your 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening, Vol 2 book.
