Deadly Floods in Turkey Quake Zone, Malawi

On February 6, the same day of the Turkey earthquakes that would claim now more than 52,000 lives, a devastating storm formed in the waters north of Australia. Cyclone Freddy traveled some 5,000 miles across the Indian Ocean to hit Madagascar and Mozambique, killing 21 people and displacing thousands. Then it twisted around to strike at Mozambique again, killing at least 20 more, before plowing through Malawi, where now more than 400 have died, many are still missing, and almost 200,000 people have been displaced. Nearly 300,000 children are in urgent need of humanitarian aid now. As the storm hit, Malawi was already fighting a cholera outbreak that had affected more than 50,000 people and claimed about 1,500 deaths. Those numbers could rise dramatically with the floodwaters.

Meanwhile, flash floods in two Turkish provinces hard-hit by last month’s quakes have claimed the lives of at least 16. Many are still missing. In Adiyaman, floodwaters swept away a container housing earthquake survivors. In Sanliurfa, near the Syrian border, more earthquake survivors were evacuated when a hospital and a campsite flooded. Meanwhile, a moderately strong earthquake hit the city of Bolu about 162 miles east of Istanbul on Thursday, sending panicked people into the streets; some even jumped from their balconies.

Lord, please have mercy. The levels of fear and desperation the people in these countries are facing now is overwhelming. Your Word says You are near to the broken-hearted, and yet so many millions don’t even know the Good News of Your love and salvation yet. Please, don’t let even one more person die without You. Bring Christians to them to help them through their hard times, to pray with them, love them, share of their provisions and also of You salvation. In anger, grief and anguish, many victims of these catastrophes are lashing out now against their government, but also against You. Rise up, O Lord, and show them who You are. Speak tenderly to the broken-hearted. Visit every grieving person in their dreams. Assign Your angel armies to rescue and protect, but also to guide every heart to a place where they can find You. Give them a hunger for Truth now that everything they’ve been standing on has been ripped out from under them. When they hear Your Good News, open wide their hearts to receive You, every barrier now down. Bring people to faith by the thousands, Lord. Sprout churches from the mire and rubble of these trials, and heal them. Heal the sick and the wounded, shield those in danger, comfort the grieving, rescue those who are trapped, provide for those in need, give them shelter, restore their electricity and water supply, pull back the floodwaters, rebuild their homes, and show Yourself loving and merciful on their behalf. May praises to You rise up from the lips of those who believe, spreading hope, joy and peace, and drawing thousands more into the safe shelter of Your arms and Kingdom.
