Dinner and a Prayer

March 23 – April 21 we will embark on a journey here at the Prayer Wall praying through every nation for every heart to awaken to God’s love. The dates for these 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening are especially significant because they coincide with Islamic Ramadan, when faithful Muslims will fast throughout the day to seek God, and then gather as a family at sunset to eat a special meal together.

As we pray for persecuted Christians to stand strong in the Lord and for their persecutors — most of whom are Muslims — to indeed encounter God, why not also fast sunrise to sunset, and then celebrate with a special family dinner each night? (See our So You Think You Can’t Fast page for suggestions and warnings.)

Even if you choose not to fast, the Dinner and a Prayer guide here in this post, at the bottom of our 30 Days of Prayer page or in the back of your 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening, Volume 2 book is a great way to encourage meaningful family times and build understanding of different cultures and needs globally, especially the need for Christ.

Following are some ideas for daily family involvement, but please feel free to do whatever God is leading you to do during this month of intercession: (You can also skip this section and jump to today’s prayer.)

  1. Invite family members to research countries or people groups of their choice in each of the regions of the world to discover interesting facts, but especially to look for barriers to the Gospel. Open Doors’ World Watchlist and Voice of the Martyrs’ Global Prayer Guide are excellent resources for this, as is Joshua Project’s list of unreached people groups in every nation.
  2. Meanwhile, search out recipes on the internet and cook a themed dinner or even just one or two dishes that coincide with the prayer emphasis for that day. We will publish a suggested menu for each day’s theme, as well as maps, verses and prayer starters. But because some international dishes may call for something you don’t have in your cupboard, you might want to plan ahead. You can find menu suggestions now at the bottom of this post, or you can just look on the internet for something suited to your family’s palate.
  3. During dinner each evening, invite family members who researched countries in the region of that day’s theme to share their findings. Point out those places on a map or globe, and talk together about hardships people face and barriers to the Gospel, such as language, culture, religion, oppressive governments, geographic isolation (mountains, rivers, deserts, etc.).
  4. If you like, lay hands on those countries or that region and pray together for every heart to awaken to Christ’s love. Use the prayer starters given for that day and the research your family members have done to pray for both Christians and unbelievers in those places.

Today’s Prayer:

Lord, we ask You for an awakening all across this nation and the world. May every heart, home, nation, tribe, and heart hunger to know You as the One True God. For those who have never heard Your name, Jesus, make Your name known now. Meet them in their dreams. Bring Christians across their path to show them love. Get up in their face, so close they can see the never-ending flame in Your eyes burning with boundless love. Invade their space. Let them feel You there with them, closer than their skin. Be their Safe Place, where they can lay down all their anxious fears and rest in the safety of fear of the Lord. Tear down every idol. Shake the things this world has stood upon. And speak, Lord, so loudly there will be no doubt in anyone’s mind that You alone are God and You alone are Good. Psalm 29 says Your voice is “powerful.” It breaks the nations, and shakes the earth. Show Yourself strong. Let no one say Your arm is too short to save. Reach into every corner to heal those who are hurting, restore what has been lost, and save those who have not yet believed. Strengthen Your church. Give us courage to stand in the face of persecution. Bring the downfall of evil governments, and open the way for peace, especially in the lives of those who have only known abuse, oppression and war. Teach us how to pray for our neighbors, both near and far. And bring forth a mighty revival all across this earth. Tear down every wall that has been set up against You. Set captive hearts free. And usher in a new era of openness to the Gospel like never before. Meet every heart right where they are. Flood them with Your truth, grace, and love, so they will know without a doubt that You are the One they’ve been looking for. May they fall to their knees in worship, receive Your salvation, and follow You alone. In Your name. Amen.
