More than a month after our post asking for prayer for Californians, storms, floods, snow and power outages continue to plague that state. Several people have died, about 9,000 are under evacuation orders, tens of thousands are without power, and 34 of California’s 58 counties are under a state of emergency.
An “atmospheric river,” which gets its name from its long narrow shape and the abundant amount of water dumped out upon the land below, caused a levee breach Friday on the Pajaro River in Monterey County, releasing massive flooding and necessitating more than 90 water rescues and hundreds of evacuations. Now, a second such storm is on its way tomorrow.
In Ventura County, a 30×300-foot sinkhole opened up between two homes.
In San Bernardino County, residents were trapped for weeks by several feet of snow that stranded them without access to food, medicine or other emergency supplies. Power outages caused further danger in below-freezing temperatures. At least five people were found dead in their homes once a pathway could be made to get to them. This Friday, yet more snow and rain fell in mountain areas. Tomorrow, an even greater atmospheric river is expected to dump all the more rain and snow, bringing with it other dangers, such as flooding and tornadoes. Let’s continue to pray.
Lord, please rescue those who are trapped and protect those who are in danger. When they cry out to You, answer them like only You can. Meet them in their time of need, speak tenderly to them, and draw them to Yourself. Perform miracles in the midst of so much tragedy, healing those who are wounded, providing for those in need and showing Your abundant love to many thousands. For those who have run from You their whole lives, use this difficult time to draw them up into Your arms. Awaken every heart in California to Your truth and love. Give the lost a hunger for You, and then bring loving Christians into their path to point them the way to salvation. Father, please have mercy on those who have lost much. Hold them in Your arms, comfort them with Your love, and help them rebuild their lives, but especially their hearts. Call out churches who will send counselors and builders and aid workers to travel to affected areas and help supply shelter, water, clothing, other needed provisions and especially the Gospel. May Your Kingdom come to California, Lord, now. Bring about a great reset, with thousands of lives turning to You and hundreds of new churches planted. Turn people’s hearts from whatever they’ve been running after that is not You. Melt their mindsets until they are left seeing things through Your eyes. Give them courage to make decisions that will help, not hurt. And draw them through Your lovingkindness to choose to spend eternity with the God who loves them and created them for Your glory.
