On February 6, the same day as the catastrophic earthquake in Turkey and Syria, Cyclone Freddy formed in the waters between Indonesia and Australia. Now on track to becoming the longest-lasting storm ever recorded, Freddy traveled 8,000 km (5,000 miles) across the entire southern Indian Ocean, affecting Mauritius and La Réunion along the way, and rising up to the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane at its peak. About two weeks ago, it made landfall in Madagascar and Mozambique, killing 21 people and displacing thousands. On Monday, it struck at Madagascar for a second time, killing eight more people and destroying more than 1,000 homes. Now, over a month since its birth, Freddy is expected to hit Mozambique for a second time today. On its last battering of that country, 28,000 homes were destroyed.
O Father, please have mercy on the peoples of Madagascar and Mozambique. Heal the wounded, comfort the grieving, rescue those who are trapped, provide for those in need, give them shelter, restore their electricity and water supply, pull back the floodwaters, rebuild their homes, and show Yourself loving and merciful on their behalf. Give every person a hunger for You, especially the 11 Islamic people groups in Madagascar and the 11 Hindu and Islamic people groups in Mozambique who have yet to hear the Good News of Your salvation. Meet them in their dreams, talk to them throughout the day, and when they cry out to You for help, answer them, O Lord. Bring Christians into their paths to powerfully show them Your love and preach the Gospel. Follow up their words of Truth with confirmation specific to each heart cry for help and love. Answer every prayer like only You can. Lift the veil from the eyes of the lost so they will see You as You truly are, and give them courage to believe. Be a Shield around every Christian in these two countries, protecting them from persecution and harm. Build their faith, knowledge, and understanding of Your Word. But especially build them in love. Show them ways they can reach out to their neighbors to help them rebuild. Make Christians a safe place where people know they can go for kindness, protection and help. Empower believers to share Your Good News in a way the lost can easily understand, and save whole families and villages. Awaken the peoples of Madagascar and Mozambique to You. Comfort them with Your love. And bring forth a mighty revival in every church all across these lands, planting hundreds more churches and strengthening the faith and witness of every believer until Your name is written on every heart all across the nations.
