Today marks the one-month anniversary of the tragic quake that has cost nearly 52,000 lives in Turkey and Syria. More than 45,000 of those fatalities happened in Turkey, making February 6 the deadliest earthquake that nation has experienced in possibly 1,500 years.
Everyone lost someone, say Christians who survived and are now helping provide shelter, warmth and food for families left out in the cold. Each of the more than 5.3 million displaced people are now simultaneously dealing with grief, trauma and the struggle to survive.
One church in an area hit hard by the quake has been feeding around 5,000 people per day. They also distributes blankets, rations, water, tents, hygiene kits and more. Other churches and Christians have been helping those in need, as well. They ask us to
“Pray for families to get permanent shelters with heaters. Most people are still in tents, and the weather has been unseasonably cold.
“Pray for the collective trauma that so many are experiencing. Ask God to help them mourn the loss of loved ones and for trauma counseling to become more available.
“There has been some spread of diseases within tent camps. Pray that it will not spread, and ask God for the health of the survivors.
“Pray for church and ministry leaders trying to juggle many tasks—from relief efforts and survival needs to spiritual care and trauma counseling.
“Pray that the government would make every effort to help rebuild homes and churches, treat the survivors justly, and give them a future.”
Global Christian Relief
Lord, we agree with these Christians’ prayers and ask You also to spread Your love so abundantly through Your people who are there on the ground that every one of those 5.3 million displaced persons will hear the Good News in a way they can easily understand and step into Your Kingdom. Cause songs of praise to rise up all throughout the towns and cities reduced to rubble, and worship services to emerge where Your Word is preached. In this country and also in Syria, where Christians are persecuted, protect those who bear Your name and give them favor with authorities and with everyone who meets them. Shield them from harm and fill the pockets where they congregate with such warmth, love, joy and peace that thousands will flock there to hear about Your love and be saved. Yes, Lord, meet every person in southeastern Turkey and norther Syria so powerfully in dreams and visions and through Christians they meet, that millions will turn to You and churches will sprout up all across those areas, new life from the ashes. As others hear of what You’re doing, spread the word even farther, drawing thousands outside the quake zone also into Your Kingdom. Perform miracles of healing, abundance and multiplication of resources in such ways that all will know it is You who did that. Yes, Lord, we ask You for a Great Awakening in Turkey, Syria and all throughout the Middle East. Stir in every heart the need for Christ, and then fill that need like only You can.
But You, God, see the trouble of the afflicted;
Psalm 10:14 NIV
You consider their grief and take it in hand.
The victims commit themselves to You;
You are the helper of the fatherless.
