Burmese Christians Ask for Prayer

Since a military coup seized power from the elected government in Myanmar two years ago, security forces have slaughtered an estimated 3,000 people. Fighting in the mostly Christian Chin State has left countless families homeless and hiding in the jungles, their villages burned, and dozens of churches ransacked, shelled and occupied.

The minority peoples of Myanmar, about half of which are Christian, have faced persecution for many years now because of an ongoing civil war that began in 1948, perhaps the longest of its kind in history. As if that isn’t enough, Buddhist extremists also assault Christians.

The atrocities of today’s military regime have only added to all this suffering, placing the Southeast Asian nation also known as Burma on the list of most dangerous places for Christians. And yet, in the midst of so much slaughter and injustice, hundreds of people have come to Christ. Praise God.

Today, we’d like to share with you these bulleted prayer requests given by Burmese Christians (See Christianity Today):

  • Pray for pastors who are in prison.
  • Pray for more than 10,000 displaced Christians and others from the town of Thantlang in Chin State, destroyed by military forces, who also burned 15 churches. Many of those survivors have now died due to depression and trauma. Pray God will give those who remain the strength to survive.
  • Pray for continued opportunities to share the Gospel, especially among Buddhists.
  • Pray for an end to the brutal military rule.
  • Pray for those fighting for peace and freedom, and also for their families.
  • Pray God will provide for Christians financially, so they can buy needed groceries and medicine, and their children can go to school. Many lost their jobs and struggle to find enough food for their families.

Lord, strengthen and comfort pastors and other Christians who are in prison. Surround them with Your angels and protect them from harm. Anoint them to share Your Good News with prisoners and guards, and make the way soon for their safe release. Please shield and deliver all who are in danger, including missionaries and others aiding in rescues and ministering to children and refugees along the border. Provide for Christians’ needs so abundantly they will also be able to share abundantly with others, especially the lost. Give survivors courage, hope, healing and LIFE. March Your armies of Light into every corner of Myanmar and bring those who serve the forces of darkness to their knees before You. Show Your glory to both those who are driven by hatred and violence and those who long for peace and security. Awaken both sides to Your love. Hear the cries of the distressed and answer them in such a way that they know it is You. Hide Christians and others in danger from those who seek to harm them, and supply abundantly for all their needs. Block every evil plan and bring terrorists to justice. Give militants, Buddhist extremists and other oppressors such vivid dreams and visions from You they are stricken with fear of the Lord and repent. Break their bonds to the demons that control them, and set them free to hunger for the One True God, the God of Love. We ask the same, Lord, for every citizen of Myanmar who still has not chosen You as Savior. Burn within them such a desperate need for grace they desert Satan’s army and surrender to Your love. Raise Christians up like beacons of Light in the darkness, shining for Your glory and stepping out in powerful acts of faith, hope, love, and grace, spreading Your Good News and drawing others to You like moths to a flame. Reach into every people group, Lord, preaching Your Word in every language to every heart and home in every tribe, until all profess You as Lord. Make a way where there seems to be no way and bring true peace to Myanmar, O God of Peace.
