Nigeria: Dozens of Christians Martyred in a Week

After the January 15 attacks, many more Christians have been martyred and abducted in Nigeria. In Kaduna State on the 17th, five believers were murdered and many more injured. On the same day in another village, terrorists kidnapped a Catholic teacher and killed a church worker. Fulani militants kidnapped four more believers on the 17th and 19th in another village and chased five others as they escaped; one was shot and injured. The gunmen returned a third time, kidnapping three more Christians and shooting another, whom they abandoned and is now in a hospital. (See GlobalChristianRelief.org.)

Then, last weekend, in several attacks, more than 17 Christians were murdered by Fulani terrorists. On Friday, January 20 in Benue State, 12 Christians died, including a man, his wife and four children; and many more were injured. At the same time, several other villages were attacked and many Christians killed. Earlier this month, two other Christian villages were attacked by Fulani tribesmen in Benue State and many injured. Then on Sunday in Bauchi State, five Christians were killed by Fulani tribesmen and a sixth, Daniel Dabwa, was abducted. (See MorningStarNews.org.)

Although Nigeria is a mostly Christian nation, of the 5,621 Christians martyred worldwide last year, 90 percent (5,014) were killed in Nigeria, due to the terrorist acts of Boko Haram and Fulani militants. The most abductions (4,726), sexual assaults, forced marriages, home and business attacks, and mental and physical abuses against Christians also occurred in Nigeria, which is second only to China in the number of churches attacked last year. (See OpenDoors.org.)

Lord, please have mercy. Comfort those who mourn lost loved ones or are traumatized. Carry displaced families to new homes where they will be safe. Provide for all their needs and speak tenderly to them. Give them courage to forgive and to stand strong in their faith. Use them to show Your love in such powerful ways many Muslims and even terrorists will come to faith. Protect Daniel and other Christians throughout Nigeria who have been abducted, and make the way for their escape. Meet them in intimate and powerful ways, and use them as a witness to their abductors. Surround them with Your angels and shield them from attacks. Nourish and strengthen them. Keep them from illness, abuse or harm. Pursue their abductors with Your relentless love. Let them experience Your forgiveness through the Christians in their custody, and humble them to repentance. Give them such a hunger for You they will ask the questions that lead to their salvation. Please, Lord, bring an end to the violence in Nigeria. March in Your angel armies and crush the enemy’s plans. For every Christian persecuted and church attacked, bring 1,000 Fulani and Muslim extremists to faith in You, Jesus, and plant hundreds of new churches. Turn what the enemy meant for evil into great good for Your Kingdom. And bless abundantly those who have suffered much for Your name. Amen.
