In 2020, Ahamada Mafabi left Islam to believe in Jesus because of the faithful and loving witness of a pastor in Butaleja District, eastern Uganda.
Uganda’s constitution provides for freedom of religion, and more than 83% of the African nation’s population is Christian. But Islamic extremists, especially in the east, continue to terrorize believers. So, at first, the pastor and church helped hide Mafabi to protect him.
But in 2021, the Lord led the new believer to use his knowledge of both Islam and Christianity to help the pastor begin Christian-Muslim debates. In one year, more than 100 Muslims chose to follow Jesus!
As a result, the two men received death threats from extremists, and God helped Mafabi escape four assassination attempts.
Then, early this month, at one of the open debates, 13 Muslims came to Christ. Enraged Islamists in the crowd shouted, “Mafabi, stop your blasphemous utterance of equating Issa [Jesus] to God, calling him the Son of God!” On his way home that night, January 2, the 37-year-old father of four was murdered by extremists shouting, “Allah Akbar” (God is greater).
The pastor asks for prayer for Mafabi’s wife and children, ages 3-14, as they mourn. They are in immediate need of food, safe shelter and school fees.
He is also concerned for his ministry’s newly built center for converts from Islam, where they are discipled and trained in job skills to make up for losing employment because of their faith. “I have some fears, but this is part of the spiritual warfare that comes with Christian persecution, and I am ready to face it,” the pastor said.

Lord, please comfort Mafabi’s family as they mourn. Provide for all their needs and keep them safe from harm. Please also be a Shield around the pastor, church members, and all the new converts from Islam. It’s hard to imagine such evil committed by those who claim to serve God but don’t even know who You are. In fact, it is extremists’ hatred and violence that gives so many Muslims a hunger for Love. You loved us so much You gave Your Son Jesus to die in our place so we can live. John 3:16. As hard as it is for Muslims to believe Jesus is One with You, it is even harder for those truly seeking Truth to continue believing in a religion that sacrifices not to give life, as Jesus did, but to maim and murder. So we ask You, Lord, to rise up and fight for the souls of the lost. Pursue those who persecute. Open their eyes to see who You truly are. Give them such powerful encounters with Jesus they drop their vows to murder, and choose Life instead. John 14:6. Your Word says that anyone who hates another does not know God, for God is Love. 1 John 4:7-21. Propagate this truth so loudly that for every convert martyred, 1,000 Muslims come to faith. And for every church attacked, 100 more are planted and filled with former Muslims who now believe in Truth. Surround every believer with Your angel armies, and open the eyes of their persecutors to see those angels and tremble in fear of the Lord. Heal the wounded. Rescue those in danger. Bring back to life those once dead. Perform signs and miracles and wonders of such biblical proportions all eyes will turn to You and millions will place their faith in the God of Wonders, this God of Love who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
