Missionary Pilot Imprisoned in Mozambique

As Ryan Koher of Mission Aviation Fellowship readied his plane to take vitamins to needy orphans in tumultuous northern Mozambique at the beginning of November, he and two elderly South African volunteers, W. J. du Plessis and Eric Dry, were detained. Even after a month of emprisonment, charges against them remain unclear but may involve suspicion of supporting insurgents, according to a recent Christianity Today article.

Brutal persecution by Muslim extremists has ranked the Christian-majority nation one of the most dangerous in the world for followers of Jesus, mainly due to Islamic State Mozambique (ISM), which has vowed to murder all Christians and Jews who do not convert to Islam. Cabo Delgado, where Koher was headed to help Christian orphanages, has been racked with violence over the past five years, with more than 4,000 people dead and close to a million displaced due to infighting between ISM and government forces.

The missionary pilot’s wife Annabel, and sons Elias, 3, and Hezekiah, 2, have returned to the US for security reasons, while he remains in a maximum security prison in southern Mozambique.

This time last year, we were praying here at the Prayer Wall for missionaries who had been abducted in Haiti. God miraculously opened the way for them to walk past the guards unnoticed, and then over the mountains to safety. They were reunited with their families in time for Christmas. Lord, we ask You, now please, for a miracle of such proportions for Ryan, W.J. and Eric. Keep them safe and make the way for them to be released swiftly and reunited with their families before Christmas. Be a Shield around them, guarding their minds, hearts and bodies from harm. Fill their cells and the entire prison with Your angels and the power of Your felt presence. Perform signs and miracles and wonders to turn all eyes to You, and give the Christians opportunities to share Your good news with the lost around them. Be near to all persecuted Christians in Mozambique, O God of Love. Protect their families and strengthen their faith. Give them courage to forgive, and bring their persecutors to repentance. Make the way for the violence to end and peace to reign. Invade terrorist camps with Your angel armies, and give every violent offender such a clear power encounter with Almighty God they will drop their weapons, fall to their knees in fear of the Lord and surrender to Your sovereignty. Bring Muslims to faith in Jesus by the thousands this year and next, especially as extremists who claim to serve God act opposite Your heart. Give every Muslim a deep repulsion to hatred and terror. Fill them instead with a longing for Truth and Love. Convert terrorist leaders, changing their lives so dramatically hundreds of Muslim extremists turn their allegiance from serving Satan’s purposes of killing, stealing and destoying to following Love’s purposes for abundant life. John 10:10.
