Chinese Churches in UK Growing

Despite yesterday’s post that Christians are no longer the majority in the UK, Chinese churches in England have doubled and tripled in size because of the large numbers of immigrants from Hong Kong. In fact, one Chinese church in Manchester has grown from 200 to 1,200.

“Almost 1 in 4 Hong Kong immigrants to the UK are Christian,” states Christianity Today, reporting on a recent Bible and the Chinese Community in Britain study. “Many are pastors or Christian workers who take up leadership roles in Cantonese-speaking ministries upon moving to Britain. There are now more than 200 Chinese Christian communities and organizations in the UK, according to the BCCB study, and at least 17 were established in the past 18 months.”

“Chinese non-Christian immigrants are open to Christianity and ready to hear the gospel…. If Chinese Christians don’t mobilize fast enough, they risk missing a key evangelism window, as the study found British-born Chinese to be less receptive to the faith.”

Isabel Ong, CT

Lord, we are sad for Hong Kong’s loss of Christians and pastors, but grateful for the freedom they now have in England to worship You. As Chinese unbelievers previously hindered from hearing Your good news are now hungry for Truth and living in a country where they are free to pursue You, empower the Chinese church and other Christians in England to rise to the task of reaching the lost before they are swallowed up by the UK’s increasingly secular environment. And use Chinese Christians to reach out also to others in England who have wandered from the faith or have never experienced the transformational power of Christ’s love. Open up ways for lovers of Christ living abroad to connect with unbelievers in China and share Your good news. Make every Chinese heart hungry to know the Truth who sets them free.
