Indonesia: Pray Earthquake Victims Find Christ

Because of Islamic oppression, Indonesia is ranked among the most dangerous countries in the world for Christians. But when an earthquake struck Indonesia’s West Java Province earlier this week, killing at least 310 people, injuring more than 2,000 and displacing more than 82,000, Indonesian Christians rushed to the scene to help.

Victims would normally need to wait for help from government, international or Muslim aid agencies; but in recent years, Indonesian churches and nonprofits have formed a Christian Community Network for Disaster Management called Jakomkris to help with such needs.

A communication center has been set up in a local church, where food and other donations are received and distributed to those in need. “A Mennonite group showed up to provide clean water. About 10 doctors and 20 nurses from a Christian medical fellowship arrived to help overwhelmed hospitals treat patients. A Presbyterian group provided hygiene kits and services for the disabled, while a Pentecostal group set up kitchens for those affected in five different locations.” (See this week’s Christianity Today article by Angela Lu Fulton and Isabel Ong.)

  • Pray God will protect from persecution or harm each of the Christian aid workers and the posts where they are providing help.
  • Pray He will open up safe opportunities for Christians to share the Good News with the lost, and His love will flow through them so powerfully, hundreds will put their faith in Christ.
  • Pray God will comfort those who mourn and provide for all their needs in such a way that they see Jesus as He truly is and open wide their arms to receive Him.
  • Pray for miracles by God’s mighty hand, especially healing for the injured and multiplying food and other supplies. Pray rumors of His love and power will run throughout all the camps for displaced families, and God will place within every heart a deep hunger for Him, such that the lost flock to the Christians to ask questions that lead to their salvation.
  • Pray the whole nation of Indonesia will awaken to God’s love, that Muslim extremists will lay down their hatred of Christians to receive Christ’s love and experience the peace, joy, fulfillment and abundant life only found in Him.
