Myanmar: Family Flees Violence

After the brutal military takeover of Myanmar in February of 2021, Paw (not his real name) and his family were forced to flee their village. “Our lives were so peaceful before the coup. Our children could go to school, I could work on my farm and life was good,” he said.

But when violence threatened his village, he led his family on a one-month trek to find safety. They traveled mostly at night, “so the war planes cannot see us and bomb us. In the day time, we would hide under the trees. We were running out of water and food on the way and we all got so weak. It was rainy season so we got sick” without shelter.

At last, they arrived at an internal camp for displaced families, where they now reside. More than a million people are interned in such IDP camps in Myanmar, still not safe because even these are targeted by the junta. But at least Paw’s family now has shelter, some medical supplies and very small portions of food provided by donors. The food is “not enough” he said, and they must travel far to find water. But they are so grateful to those who have donated to help families like his, who have a small chance at life in the midst of so much tragic death.

“If the war ever stops, I would like to go back home and help those who were left behind,” Paw said.

Lord, we thank You for those who have given so that Paw’s family can have food and shelter, and so those with no access to Bibles can have one. As thousands of villagers in Myanmar flee the violence, please guide them to safety and open the way for them to hear Your Good News and be saved. Father, we ask You, please, to make a way for this bloody war to end soon. Bring the violent to their knees before You in repentance, and open the way for peace, for freedom to seek You and to live, and for freedom, especially freedom in Christ.
