Myanmar: Miracle Turns Buddhist to Christ

Buddhist extremists have long persecuted Christians in Myanmar, often quite violently. Gawa (not her real name), a staunch Buddhist, also grew up hating Christians, even though many in her tribe had come to Christ.

When she became paralyzed, her parents took her to Buddhist monks, offering expensive sacrifices for her healing. When that didn’t work, they took her to a doctor. They lost all their land paying for scans and tests, but to no avail. Gawa’s condition was declared incurable.

“There was no strength left in me and I gave up my faith in Buddha. I just wanted to die,” Gawa said. “But I couldn’t walk in order to buy poison and kill myself.” She laid on her bed that way for two years.

Then one day, a pastor visited and asked to pray for her. Gawa told him she didn’t want his prayers. But a week later, he returned and told her stories from the Bible of Jesus healing people and even raising Lazarus from the dead. Her interest now peaked, she asked him to tell her more, so he returned the next morning “with a big smile on his face” and taught for four hours.

“After that, I still wanted to hear more. All of his sharing about Jesus was so sweet in my ears and precious in my heart.” So she invited him back and he prayed for her. “All my sadness was gone. Now my heart was filled with happiness, and for a while I forgot that I was paralyzed. I cried to the Lord and accepted Christ as my personal Savior,” she said. “I kept praying every day after this, and slowly my fingers, hands, and legs started to improve. After three months, I was totally healed. Praise the Lord!”

Gawa wanted to read the Bible herself, but only the pastor had one. So, she began praying for her own Bible. She even saved money to buy one, but there were none to buy, not even in the capital city. Now, 27 years later, she finally owns her own Bible, donated and smuggled to her by Christians who care.

  • Pray Bibles will make it to the many thousands who need one in Myanmar, and for God to shield and protect the Christians involved in making that happen.
  • The political climate in Myanmar is extremely violent, and missionaries, pastors and other faithful followers of Christ are specifically targeted to be murdered. Pray God will hide them and their families from those who mean them harm.
  • Pray for the Gospel to reach the more than 42 million in Myanmar who have never heard, including 52 unreached people groups.
