A Deadly Weekend

When tens of thousands of people pressed into the streets of Seoul, South Korea‘s Itaewon neighborhood Saturday night to celebrate Halloween, the crowds grew so dense, they panicked, crushing people underfoot. A total of 154 died.

In Mogadishu, Somalia on Saturday, at least 100 died and more than 300 others were wounded when two car bombs exploded.

In Morbi, Gujarat, India on Sunday, about 140 died when a bridge collapsed, plunging hundreds of people into the water.

In the coastal village of Kusiong, Philippines, alarms sounded to alert villagers of impending danger from tropical storm Nalgae. But because of a devastating earthquake and tsunami in 1976 which killed thousands in that village, they have been conducting regular drills to guard against tsunamis. As a result, when the alarms rang at the end of last week, villagers ran to higher ground to take shelter in a church, not expecting the danger to come from above. A boulder-laden mudslide rushed down the mountain and buried the church and 60 homes. It is yet uncertain how many have died, but officials estimate 80-100. Nalgae has left at least 73 people dead throughout northwestern Philippines.

Lord, please comfort those who mourn, rescue those in need, heal those who are wounded, and provide for all their needs. But most of all, O God of All, please be merciful and compassionate. Bring to them the Good News of Your love. Let them know the Truth who sets them free. You said, “I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NIV. Please, Lord, make a way for every heart to hear Your Word and feel Your great love for them. Awaken the many peoples of every tribe and tongue in Korea, India, the Philippines and beyond. Let them know the riches of Your grace and mercy. Make Your invitation to salvation clear. Tear down every wall built to keep You out, and invade the nations with Your glory. Topple the idols. Split apart false religions. Meet people in their dreams, get Bibles into every language, bring Christians to show Your love to the lost, perform signs and miracles and wonders in the presence of all, so that none is left without a full understanding of Christ’s death on the cross and the forgiveness of sins. Don’t let even one more person die anywhere in the world without knowing You love them and offer them eternal life. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
