After four failed rainy seasons, parts of Somalia are set to officially reach famine status this month. In fact, Oxfam projects that one person is likely to die every 36 seconds from hunger between now and the end of the year. Those suffering from acute hunger have already surpassed the numbers from 2011’s famine, in which more than 260,000 people died. About 31 million people in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya now face acute food insecurity, with 11 million at such high levels of insecurity they are in dire need of food assistance.
In addition, on Sunday, an attack on a hotel in southern Somalia by Muslim extremists injured nearly 50 people and killed close to ten, including civilians and students from a nearby school.
