More than 40 people have died and 11 are hospitalized after a coal mine explosion in Amasra, northern Turkey. As we pray for those involved in this tragedy, let’s also lift up the 46 unreached people groups who still have yet to hear the Gospel. Turkey is listed among the most dangerous countries in the world for Christians because of Islamic oppression.
Christians in Turkey experience incredible pressure from very strong—and increasing—religious nationalism in Turkey. The government continues to target even foreign Christians in its borders, along with the foreign spouses of Turkish citizens. It’s not technically illegal for Muslims to convert to Christianity, but any Muslim who does decide to follow Jesus comes under immense strain from their families and communities, who often demand the convert return to Islam. These believers are sometimes forced to lead a double life and hide their conversion.
Open Doors
Lord, please rescue those who are trapped, heal those who are wounded, and comfort those who mourn. Make a way for the lost to hear Your Good News. Awaken every heart in Turkey to You. Point them to Christian websites with Your message of Truth. Get Your Word into every home in a language they can easily understand. Don’t let any barrier stand in the way of whole families and villages and people groups coming to Christ. And protect Christians from persecution. Be a Shield around them, hiding them from those who seek to do them evil, and yet emboldening them to share Your Good News with those who are seeking You. For those currently suffering persecution, give them courage, Lord. Be near to them and speak tenderly to them, giving them strength to endure and shining through them Your light in the darkness.
