As of early this morning, the death toll is at 101 and rising, more than 1,600 people have been rescued after Hurricane Ian’s destructive path through Florida and beyond, and 491,000 homes still have no power; many also have no drinkable water.
Lord, we can’t even imagine what people are going through now in the midst of such devastation and loss, especially those who have lost loved ones. Please wrap Your arms around each grieving person and comfort them with Your love. Let them hear Your voice speaking tenderly to them. Meet them in the dark hours of the night and in their desperate moments. When they cry out to You, answer them like only You can, O God. Bring Christians to them to comfort them and care for their needs. Open churches to take people in who are in need of shelter. For those who are still missing, You know where they are. Be near to them and calm their fears. Point the way for rescuers to find them quickly and get them to safety and to whatever medical care they need. But most of all, as they wait to be found, let them know they are not alone, that You are with them. For unbelievers, use this tragedy as a wake up call. Move them to leave whatever paths they’ve been on that have kept them from You and choose You as their Savior now. For those who already know You, give them a yearning for more of you. Give them courage and passion to recommit their lives to You and You alone. Awaken Florida, South Carolina and other areas affected by the storm. Remind every heart why they were created, so they’ll turn aside from whatever distractions have kept them from giving You first place. Draw families closer together. Plant churches where one hasn’t been before. Use the love, peace, joy and singing of Christians in the midst of such loss and tragedy to draw the lost into Your arms. Show believers how they can reach out to their needy neighbors and show them Your love. Provide for their needs so abundantly they will also abundantly help others. Let the kindness of those who love You shine so brightly many will take back their judgments of Christians and long to know You as Lord. Give Gov. DeSantis and others in leadership wisdom in each situation. And have mercy, O God of Love, on the many families in great need at this time. Heal their wounds, keep them from sickness, push back the floodwaters, get the electricity back on, clear the roads of debris, and bring clean water, food and shelter to those without. Begin every rebuilding with a rebuilding of the heart by the In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
